Washington Park
Older homes that have aged well
Homes in the Washington Park area have small front yards or sit just off the sidewalk along the city’s tree-lined streets. Most homes have front porches that allow homeowners to take advantage of cool evening breezes and neighborly chats. “Washington Park is on the north side of Ithaca, and the park of the same name sits right in the middle,” says Hogue. “Most homes were built more than 100 years ago as homes for the working class. There are some very nice homes in the area that people have spent money on. The area is being gentrified.” Italianate and Victorian homes in their simplest forms are popular. Colonial, craftsman and foursquare styles are also found here. Homebuyers can expect to pay between $290,000 and $510,000 for an updated foursquare home with modern amenities.Good grade schools and great colleges

Washington Park’s “gorges” green spaces
Washington Park, the green space within the neighborhood is a small but well-tended park with several shaded walking paths. Ithaca’s official slogan is “Ithaca is gorges.” Throughout the region, the narrow gorges, formed eons ago by retreating glaciers, feature plunging waterfalls, cascading streams and water-carved cliffsides. Local parks and trails provide stunning views. Cascadilla Gorge Trail is a 10-minute walk from Washington Park. This stunning, three-quarter-mile trail leads from Downtown Ithaca to the Cornell University campus. In the course of the walk, hikers pass eight waterfalls, ranging in size from eight to 80 feet. Once one enters the trail, the sounds of the city are immediately muted by rushing water. Conway Park is a small, triangular-shaped park steps outside the neighborhood. The fenced-in area features a playground area and a large, open field. Alex Haley Pool is a public swimming pool in the community that is open during summer months. The Greater Ithaca Activities Center is in Washington Park. The large, multi-cultural center provides afterschool care for students and social programs for all age groups, including local trips for senior citizens.Steps from shopping and supping
Washington Park residents have a wide range of shopping options. The neighborhood is just steps from the DeWitt Mall, a multi-use facility with shops, restaurants and office space. Buffalo Street Books sells a variety of titles and subjects and features book signings and story hours. Fibers is a women’s apparel store that sells the latest fashions and trendy jewelry. Grocery shoppers can check off their lists at GreenStar Food Coop in the mall or walk a half mile to Wegmans. During the summer months, the Ithaca Farmers Market on nearby Meadow Street offers local produced vegetables, flowers and crafts. There are plenty of dining options in the area. Coal Yard Café is a neighborhood spot to grab a morning cup of joe. Luna Inspired Street Food is a favorite spot for tacos. Wings Over Ithaca and Moosewood Restaurants are popular dinner spots.
Plenty to do and see in Ithaca
Nearby Stewart Park hosts Ithaca’s annual Reggae Fest in June. Along with dancing, kids’ activities, yoga and skateboarding, the music-filled event includes food trucks and craft vendors. The Apple Harvest Festival returns with crisp fall weather. During the three-day festival, visitors are introduced to all sorts of facts and information regarding the apple, including delectable new recipes and apple cider.A walkable city with hilly terrain
Washington Park is bordered by NY 13, which runs through the city and runs into Interstate 81. Commuters to Syracuse can follow that route for the 53-mile drive to Salt City. The Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is 5 miles via NY 13. The Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit company provides bus service throughout the area. Although this is a walkable neighborhood, residents may prefer to have a vehicle during inclement weather. Winters are cold and snowy. Due to the snowfall and the very hilly terrain, drivers should note that in winter snow tires and chains are often necessary.
