A diverse but close community
Just north of downtown Jackson is Fondren, a neighborhood with inspiring architecture, plenty of shopping and a state park. “I was on the Fondren Renaissance Board for 15 years, and I have to say one of the best things about Fondren is the sense of community,” says Cecilia Bullock, Realtor with Charlotte Smith Real Estate and Fondren resident. “There’s a lot of diversity culturally and economically, but there’s a spot for everyone.” The homes are secluded in residential areas on the northwest side of the neighborhood. In the middle of the neighborhood is North State Street, a road teeming with shopping and dining options. “We have the best restaurants in the state, and that’s a fact,” says Bullock. The street is also home to bowling alleys, movie theaters and live music venues. Further to the southeast is the 305-acre LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, which is home to miles of hiking trails and much more.
Tudors, Victorians and cottages
The median price for a single-family home is $185,000, but that jumps to $310,000 for a home with two bedrooms. The majority of the houses sit on the northwest side of the downtown shopping area in quiet suburban neighborhoods. Many homes are either ranch-style or cottages with small yards featuring mature trees. However, there are a handful of historic homes. “You can see homes from the 1930’s or 40’s still in great condition,” says Bullock. “Tudors next to Victorian cottages with mature azaleas and dogwoods where everything blends.” Some houses have private driveways and garages, but on-street parking is necessary in some areas. There are not many sidewalks in the area for jogging or dog walking.

For a date night, Saltine is a hip spot with a neon sign and mural to welcome guests. Known for the oyster bar, Saltine has seafood specialties in a quiet and intimate atmosphere. State Street has dozens of boutique shops, from antique stores to art and framing studios. The End of All Music is a vintage record store with jazz and blues records on vinyl.
