Accessibility and diversity come together in Antioch Acres
Accessibility and diversity come together in Antioch Acres
Found just a few miles from the Missouri River, Antioch Acres is a well-established neighborhood of Kansas City's northside. It's a true mix of atmosphere, with commercial areas to the north and south, its center of residential space, and the scattering of parks throughout. Despite its tiny footprint, Antioch Acres has a diverse offering of worship spaces, with the Masjid Al-Salaam and Pho Tien Temple standing alongside several Christian churches, one of which was built in 1859 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Residents have immediate access to the city entertainment when they choose, but one of Antioch Acres's biggest appeals is that much of what they need day-to-day is practically in their backyard.
Antioch Acres has homes with large front yards.
Midcentury properties abound for homebuyers
A drive along the tree-shaded residential streets reveals decorated porches, carefully tended gardens and half-acre lots kept mowed short in the summer. Most houses were built between 1950 and 1980, with a few added up until the end of the 20th century. Architectural styles are kept simple, classic vernacular types such as ranch homes and Cape Cods, with the occasional flare of picturesque cottages. "The low price points make it a very attractive neighborhood for many buyers," says John Simone, a Realtor with ReeceNichols for over a decade. "Especially first-timers." Properties are primarily two- to three-bedroom single-family homes starting around $150,000. Homes typically only get between $200,000 and $230,000 if they're exceptionally well-maintained or renovated or offer additional acreage.
From big commercial retail to a local food scene
There are significant commercial areas along both Vivion Road and Chouteau Trafficway, with big-name stops like Target, Walmart and PetSmart. There are plenty of fast-casual food options, but the area's locally owned restaurants bring the real flare. Macarena's was opened to bring California-style Mexican fare to the Kansas City food scene, while the rumbling food truck of Taqueria Ibarra along North Brighton Avenue doles out fresh tortas and tacos. When residents want something homegrown? The family-owned greenhouse of Antioch Urban Growers is dedicated to small-space gardening – and sometimes, they even host live music in their greenhouse.
