Growing community and markets through the years

Less than 20 miles north of Buffalo, the village of Kenmore focuses on the people who live there. “Your community is your residents,” says Patrick Mang, Kenmore’s mayor of 17 years and a lifelong resident of the village. Since its incorporation in 1899, Kenmore has had its own fire, police and garbage services and nowadays plows the roads throughout the winter. “My family has been here since the beginning,” says Mang. “And the transformation from then to now has been incredible.” Twenty-two years ago, Kenmore didn’t have as many local businesses and no farmers market, something Mang sought to change. “It was always the dream to have young families walk up with a little pull-wagon and then leave the market with a wagon filled with produce,” says Mang. “It took 18 years to get there, but that’s the reality now.”

Ruler-straight roads with close homes

“It’s a very dense population,” says Mang. “But it doesn’t feel close to each other.” Driveways lead to the back of the property and generally have a two-car garage, although some homes may stick with just a driveway. While back alleys are uncommon, a few roads may have them. “Home prices are way up, but a lot of younger families are moving in,” Mang says. Bungalows, Foursquares, Dutch Colonials and Cape Cods can begin around $130,000 and reach $372,000. Colonial Revival homes tend to be a bit pricier, beginning around $230,000 and reaching $450,000. Smaller trees dot easements, and neutral colors of homes make the streets feel as though they could stretch on forever. Meticulously crafted front-yards are common, especially with the small land that each property contains. The interior of homes may have original hardwood floors and doors, with remodeled kitchens and bathrooms.

Park with a pool, playground and pickleball

Mang Park, named after Patrick Mang’s family as a founding family for the village, is one of the focal points in the village. With the more classic items such as a playground, tennis and pickleball courts and pool, the Kenmore Community Center sits on the intersection of Mang Avenue and Wilber Avenue and will occasionally host movie nights. The park’s walking paths cross over Wilbur Avenue, and with grills and picnic shelters scattered throughout, summer picnics and impromptu races light up the area as families and children use the open space. The village green sits on the front lawn of the municipal building and is another focal point, with the Farmer’s Market and various other events taking place there.
