Marble City
Historic and new homes set in the Knoxville hills
Home architecture in Marble City varies widely and includes everything from prefabricated dwellings to bungalows and split-levels. Homes closer to the highway on the eastern side were built around the 1930s on modest, hilly plots of land, with occasional maple trees dappling the homes with shade. Residences get bigger the farther to the west they are and are often set toward the back of larger plots of land to allow for more trees and greenery to decorate the yard. Homes can range from $210,000 for a two- to three-bedroom ranch-style home or bungalow built in the early to mid-1900s, to $800,000 for a four- to five-bedroom newly constructed ranch-style home or cottage.Three main routes to downtown
The main thoroughfares of the Marble City neighborhood are Sutherland Avenue and Kingston Pike, both of which have plenty of sidewalks and Knoxville Area Transit serves the community with “multiple bus routes passing through the neighborhood,” according to Becca May, the property manager at Sutherland Square Apartments who has worked in Knoxville property management for over eight years. Marble City also offers quick access to Interstate 40, which may make the northern border of the area loud, but it also makes it easy for residents to commute to the University of Tennessee or the rest of downtown Knoxville.Stores and dining along Sutherland Avenue
Sutherland Avenue, which runs through the heart of Marble City, is home to great dining options. Residents can choose from a mix of local favorites, such as a meal at Dead End BBQ or one of the breweries or coffee shops nearby. “It has a great food scene with plenty of gastropubs, breweries and rooftop bars,” says May. Kingston Pike, the primary route along the southern border of Marble City, also offers a mix of local and chain restaurants, bakeries and stores. Residents can shop at the Fresh Market on Kingston Pike or head to nearby Bearden to access Kroger, Aldi and Publix.Westwood Park and John Tarleton Park
Marble City is the place for fans of the outdoors. The area boasts several parks, including Westwood Park and John Tarleton Park. Westwood Park serves Knoxville residents with a playground for the kids and a picnic area, while John Tarleton Park offers football fields that can be reserved. For a park with more education opportunities, children can visit Safety City. Set within a miniature town, this community service project offers elementary-aged kids a hands-on education in vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle and fire safety. Helping to make up the City of Knoxville’s nearly 113 miles of paved greenways, Third Creek Greenway and Bearden Village Greenway are wheelchair-accessible and perfect for walking pets, jogging and skating.Knox County Schools
Parents can select from a variety of school options in Marble City. Elementary students attending public school will commonly head to West View Elementary, which receives a C-plus rating on Niche. Middle school students attend Bearden Middle School, while West High School serves the area’s older students, and both schools earn a B-plus rating. West High offers the option of an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and, in addition to athletics, provides dozens of academic, service and interest clubs for students.Right next to downtown events
The Marble City area is near the heart of Knoxville’s biggest events. Each April, runners in the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon run through the southern side of the neighborhood on the Third Creek Greenway. There is also the annual Greek Fest, held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church every October since 1977, and it allows thousands of visitors to enjoy Greek food and culture. For history and architecture buffs, tours are available of the imposing 19th-century mansions Crescent Bend, Bleak House and Historic Westwood
