Larger homes around Lakewood Country Club

Lakewood Country Club Estates — locally called “Country Club” — is a neighborhood that most residents have their eye on for years before settling on a home. This small community surrounding Lakewood Country Club’s 18-hole golf course is a pocket of larger homes and spacious lots among the area’s more uniform suburbs, like Lakewood Mutual. “Of course, there are people from all over, but for people who’ve been in the area for a while, Country Club is where they look when they want to move up to something bigger and nicer,” says Realtor Allison Van Wig, leader of Van Wig & Associates with Keller Williams Coastal and a long-time resident of this area of Lakewood. Between the tree-lined streets, convenient golfing and nearby shopping at the Long Beach Exchange, there isn’t much the neighborhood doesn’t offer. This explains the only caveat, which is that homes here are rarely listed. “The market here is quiet,” says Van Wig. “People tend to stay in Country Club longer than Lakewood Mutual because it’s what they want and where they’ve been looking to move for a long time.”

Sprawling ranch-style homes and stylish midcentury moderns

Country Club was developed in the 1960s, so ranch-style, Spanish-style and midcentury modern homes are prominent — the designs of choice for many Southern California communities of the period. Along with the variety of architecture, size is mainly what differentiates these homes from surrounding tract neighborhoods. “You don’t find any small homes in Country Club,” says Van Wig. “It also has cool architecture, like midcentury moderns and other custom homes, instead of just being all ranch-style or Spanish-style.” Lawns are also slightly more spacious, allowing for horseshoe driveways and backyard pool patios. Most homes, from sprawling ranch-style houses to midcentury modern designs, range from $1 million to $2 million. Expansive Spanish Revivals and modernist mansions added over the years can range from $2 million to $3 million.

Lakewood Country Club and Lakewood Tennis Center

The literal and metaphorical heart of the community is Lakewood Country Club. Homes are built around the club’s 18-hole course, designed by architect William Bell in 1933. Membership is a convenient option for residents, but the course is also open to the public. The clubhouse, located in the neighborhood’s southwest corner, has a restaurant for post-round drinks or an easy meal. The Lakewood Tennis Center is next to the clubhouse. This facility has 14 courts and regularly hosts United States Tennis Association tournaments. Players can book a court or get lessons at the center’s Player Development Academy. Just north of the neighborhood, Bolivar Park has a pool, baseball fields and a playground. Walking paths can be found 2 miles east at Heartwell Park, a 122-acre greenspace.

Shopping and dining at the Long Beach Exchange

The Long Beach Exchange, or LBX for short, is on the neighborhood’s south side. This indoor-outdoor mall offers shopping, dining and activity. The main complex has retailers like Nordstrom Rack and Ulta, along with various eateries. The plaza continues to the south, where there’s a Whole Foods and the Hangar Food Hall — an old airplane hangar that has been repurposed into an arcade of food and beverage stalls. LBX also has a selection of exercise studio chains for those interested in yoga, spin and other workout classes. The Lakewood Center is an even larger shopping complex a couple of miles up Lakewood Boulevard with retailers, department stores, supermarkets and big-box chains.

Lakewood Country Club Estates residents can enjoy LBX, a well designed shopping area featuring the Hangar, a spacious and modern food court concept.

Businesses and Long Beach Airport to the south

Like most Southern California communities, cars are the transportation of choice here. Some residents have a short drive to corporate offices in the business park just south of the neighborhood, across East Carson Street. There are also businesses in Davenport Park, 2 miles north. Long Beach Memorial Hospital is another large employer in the area, 4 miles south. Commuters can also get around Los Angeles County on state Route 19 east of the neighborhood, and Interstate 710 and Interstate 405 a few miles away. The Port of Los Angeles, one of the West Coast’s busiest shipping terminals, is less than 15 miles south, and downtown LA is just over 20 miles north. Air travel couldn’t be closer, with Long Beach Airport offering regional flights on the neighborhood’s south side. Some aircraft noise is expected.
