A history of farmland
Lamont got its start from seasonal workers migrating into the area with their families to seek better lives during the Great Depression. Today, this agricultural town 10 miles south of Bakersfield is known for its rows of farm fields of grapes, almonds, pistachios, carrots and other crops. “If I won the lottery, I’d invest in this area because it’s going to grow from people moving farther away from the Los Angeles Basin," says Lorena Cervantes, District Manager for the Bear Mountain Recreation and Parks District.
Local bakery, butchery and other bites
For most of their dining and shopping needs, residents head to Main Street, which runs north to south through the middle of town. At the northern end, locals pick up fresh bread and meats at Carnitas Uruapan, a bakery and butcher shop. And next door, they can stop in for ice cream and other desserts at Neveria y Antojitos Las Tapatia's. A half-mile down the street, pizza lovers indulge at Rusty’s Pizza Parlor, and a half-mile south from there, Root Beer King serves up burgers and fries in a 1950s diner setting. On the southern end of Main Street is Mariscos Las Islitas, a neighborhood favorite with seafood-inspired Mexican cuisine.

With a name like Weedpatch, it’s easy to imagine a field of weeds—and that wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. South of Lamont, this agricultural and industrial town has a number of farms, growing crops from grapes and almonds to carrots and root vegetables. John Steinbeck stayed in Weedpatch while working on Grapes of Wrath, and the area served as inspiration for his 1936 novel. While this town may seem sparse in residential and commercial real estate, the rising costs of living along the L.A. Basin are moving people farther away toward the areas around Weedpatch. “If I won the lottery, I’d invest in this area because it’s going to grow," says Lorena Cervantes, District Manager for the Bear Mountain Recreation and Parks District.
The housing inventory is considerably low in Weedpatch, and there are more renters than buyers. “The houses are older, and owners don’t want to invest in them due in part to the number of seasonal workers who temporarily move to the area with their families to work on the surrounding farms,” Cervantes says. However, there are 1,000- to 1,700-square-foot ranch homes and bungalows available, some with driveways and quarter-acre yards, in the $175,000 to around $300,000 price range. The Weedpatch Country Apartments are fully populated, where 1-to-4-bedroom apartments range from 630 to 1,150 square feet. Also in town is the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park.
The Vineland Elementary School District and the Kern High School District serve students living in Weedpatch. Learners can start at Vineland Elementary School, which receives a D-minus Niche grade, before moving on to Sunset Middle School, which receives a D-plus. High schoolers can attend Arvin High School, which receives a B Niche grade and is ranked the No. 3 Niche Standout High School in the Bakersfield Area. “The teachers in this community are great and willing to help,” Cervantes says.
At both Lamont Park and Bear Mountain Recreation Center, there are playgrounds, community pools, athletic fields and basketball courts. “The Junior Giants Foundation, the flagship of the Giants Community Fund, sponsors and donates equipment to the youth baseball league, for athletes aged 5 to 14. And right after baseball ends, we have a youth soccer league,” says Cervantes. “The park also hosts seasonal community events, like a Christmas Parade and a 4,000-egg Easter Egg Hunt.”
Weedpatch is home to Cal-Organic Farms, the largest organic vegetable producer and distributor in the United States. Locals pick up groceries and household essentials at Amigos Supermarket or Garcia’s Market, located just north in Lamont. And when they’re ready for a bite to eat, residents can indulge in a burger and fries in a 1950s diner setting at Root Beer King or seafood-inspired Mexican cuisine at Mariscos Las Islitas.
One of the final filming locations for the 1940s movie, Grapes of Wrath, was filmed at Weedpatch Camp. This camp was built by the Farm Security Administration in 1936 to house seasonal workers who fled the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. The site is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
Weedpatch Highway runs north and south through Weedpatch, turning into Main Street as it passes the town center. There are several Kern Transit bus stops peppered along Main Street, and the Bakersfield Amtrak station is 15 miles north of the area. While the history of Weedpatch may be bleak, as Cervantes says, “If you’re willing to participate in the community and have a positive attitude, this can be a great place to call home.”
