A historic, recreational community in Indianapolis
With a massive public park and housing at a lower price point than other northside areas, Lawrence welcomes a wide variety of Indianapolis residents, while it's particularly alluring for nature lovers. “There’s just a lot of trees which makes the area very, very pretty,” says Jason Compton, a Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis, who’s been selling homes in the area for over a decade. “I think Lawrence sneaks up on a lot of people, and you don’t expect it to be as nice as it is.” Lawrence is home to nearly 50,000 Hoosier basketball fans, as it sits in the northeast corner of the greater metropolitan area. For nearly the full 20th century, it was also home to Fort Benjamin Harrison, a U.S. Army base that now exists as Fort Harrison State Park. The town experienced notable growth and economic success in the 1950s when the U.S. Army Finance Center was built on Fort Harrison’s grounds. Now the Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center, the facility employs roughly 5,000 people, working as a major employer in the area.
