A quiet neighborhood in north Long Beach

Named for American activist and suffragist Jane Addams, the Addams neighborhood in north Long Beach is known for its well-kept older homes and laid-back atmosphere. It gives commuters easy access to the Interstate and relatively affordable homes. Properties in Addams generally cost $100,000 below the Long Beach median price of $820,000. Buyers are within driving distance of desirable city amenities but live away from the busiest parts of town. “It's in a really good area,” says Robert Colangeli, a Realtor with IET Real Estate who is familiar with Addams. “The college is across the street, and the beach is a short drive away. It’s very convenient for everything.”

Midcentury homes at a lower cost than other Long Beach neighborhoods

Addams is a compact neighborhood of organized city blocks. The homes sit close together on smaller lots, many of which are shaded by mature trees. With its sidewalks and privacy fences, it has a more suburban feel than seaside neighborhoods. Most homes are midcentury Minimal Traditional, often with Spanish motifs like painted stucco or red tile roofs. Addams properties cost between $340,000 and $750,000, depending on size. “North Long Beach is one of the more affordable areas in the city,” says Alan Fasnacht of Team Fasnacht Realty. “It doesn’t have the cachet of Bixby Knolls, but Addams is a very nice neighborhood.”

Grace Park and nearby Scherer Park

Grace Park is named for Grace Olive Wiley, who lived in the area and was nationally recognized for her work with venomous snakes. The park itself is a small greenspace with a playground and sits at the northern edge of Addams. To get outside, many residents head a few blocks to 26-acre Scherer Park where visitors can watch the ducks at the pond or explore the walking trails. Game courts for tennis and volleyball are popular spots to meet friends for casual matches, and it also has a dedicated dog park.
