Alamitos Bay has waterfront living among marina activity

Alamitos Bay is a coastal neighborhood in southeast Long Beach where life pretty much revolves around the water. Calm, protected canals are perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, while local yacht clubs offer quick access to the open ocean. Housing ranges from gated communities with private docks to condo complexes with waterfront views, giving buyers plenty of options at different price points. Throw in open-air shopping at 2ND & PCH, highly rated schools and easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway, and Alamitos Bay checks a lot of boxes for anyone who wants coastal living with everyday convenience.

Choose from gated neighborhoods and condo communities

Alamitos Bay has a mix of condos and single-family homes, with several gated communities lining the neighborhood canals. Most properties went up in the mid-1970s, though plenty of interiors have been updated since. On the single-family side, gated neighborhoods like Bay Harbour and Spinnaker Bay offer spacious Spanish Revival and New Traditional homes, many with deeded boat slips. Prices typically range from $1.4 million to about $2.9 million.

However, condos make up a big chunk of the market. Communities like Marina Pacifica and Stoneybrook Villas come with pools, spas and fitness centers. Prices start in the upper $300,000s and climb past $1 million for luxury units with marina access. The condos here offer some of the lowest-priced living around the bay, significantly less than Belmont Shore, Naples or Alamitos Heights.

Outdoor recreation in Alamitos Bay centers on the water

Alamitos Bay is one of the largest recreation marinas in Southern California, with over 1,600 boat slips and a variety of yacht clubs. You’ll often see locals paddleboarding over to the island of Naples or cruising out toward the Pacific Ocean. The Marine Stadium section of the bay is a rectangular venue for water skiing and rowing that hosted events during the 1932 Olympics, and spectators can still catch boating competitions from the stadium's sandy shores today. On dry land, Marine Stadium park hosts a weekly farmers market and live music in the summer, and nearby Marina Vista Park has sports courts and a playground. To get to the shores of the Pacific Ocean by car, it's about 3 to 4 miles to drive around the bay.

Waterfront dining and shopping at 2ND & PCH and Marina Pacifica

Alamitos Bay is one of the busiest shopping and dining hubs in the city. Marina Pacifica Shopping Center has a Barnes & Noble, Ralphs Fresh Fare and an AMC Theaters. Across the street, the newer 2ND & PCH is a coastal open-air center with upscale retailers like Lululemon, Anthropologie and Whole Foods Market. Both centers are packed with restaurants, and the surrounding marina adds plenty of waterfront dining. Some of the most popular spots include:

  • Boathouse on the Bay, an upscale waterfront spot serving steak and seafood with live music and sunset views
  • Schooner or Later, an old-school breakfast and lunch diner along the bay that's been around since 1985
  • Ballast Point Brewing, a two-story harborside brewpub with fire pits, dozens of beers on tap and panoramic views
  • San Pedro Fish Market, a two-level marina restaurant where guests pick fresh fish from display cases for custom preparation
  • Tantalum Restaurant, a moody Asian fusion spot with bay views and live music almost every night

The marina stays busy with waterside attractions

Alamitos Bay hosts community events all year, most of them centered on the waterfront. Here are some of the standout attractions:

  • Big Bang on the Bay is a ticketed Fourth of July party with catered barbecue, aircraft flyovers, live music and a fireworks show.
  • Marine Stadium hosts watersports competitions, including the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival.
  • The Alamitos Bay Yacht Club puts on a range of waterside events, including evening sailing races and a Memorial Day Regatta.
  • Marina Pacifica Second Saturdays takes over the boardwalk with artisan vendors and free kids' activities.

Highly rated schools with standout language and biotech programs

Alamitos Bay is served by the Long Beach Unified School District. Will Rogers Middle School offers a Dual Language Immersion Program and earned the California Distinguished School honor. Woodrow Wilson High School has specialized academic pathways, including a School of Medicine and Biotechnology and a School of the Arts. Both schools get an A rating from Niche.

Get around with the main highways or a water taxi

Alamitos Bay sits right off the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the main roads through Long Beach. PCH connects north to Interstate 405 and south to Huntington Beach. Downtown Long Beach is about 5 miles away, usually less than a 20-minute drive. And if you want to travel with a view, the AquaLink water taxi links Alamitos Bay to downtown with a 30-minute cruise in the summer months.
