Life in The Village

Known locally as “The Village” to distinguish it from the adjacent city of Lakewood, Lakewood Village is a residential community in north Long Beach. The neighborhood is almost exclusively residential, apart from shop-lined arterial streets that form its boundaries and Long Beach City College’s Liberal Arts Campus, which extends into the southern edge of the neighborhood. Otherwise, Lakewood Village is made up of single-family homes, with a couple of parks and schools thrown in for good measure.

While Lakewood Village is somewhat removed from the culture and entertainment centers LA County is known for, it makes up for it by its relative proximity to multiple popular spots. When traffic is good, Anaheim, Downtown LA, LAX and Downtown Long Beach are all less than 30 minutes away from the neighborhood by car.

Diverse midcentury homes

Lakewood Village was not developed as a planned community, so its houses are a little more architecturally diverse than those found in the surrounding Lakewood neighborhoods—a selling point for many residents. Craftsman, Spanish Colonial, and Art Deco are just a few of the home styles found in the Village, generally with ranch-style layouts. “The houses have larger footprints than other neighborhoods in the area, so you get a little more space,” says local Realtor Shannon Paul of Zaia Estates. “They also all feed into Mark Twain Elementary, which is a fantastic school.” Home prices in the area range from $900,000 for a smaller ranch-style house up to $1.3 million for more spacious new traditional homes.

Long Beach Schools

Public schools serving the area include Twain Elementary and Bancroft Middle School, which are both graded A-minus by Niche. Lakewood High School also happens to have an A-minus rating on Niche, and offers dual enrollment classes through LBCC and CSU Long Beach. These schools are part of the Long Beach Unified School District, which allows students to apply to any of the high schools in the district via a School of Choice application.

North Long Beach Transportation.

Lakewood Village’s central location is a major selling point for many residents. It’s a 10-mile drive from the neighborhood to Downtown Long Beach, 15 miles to Anaheim and 20 miles to Downtown LA. Actual drive times can vary dramatically due to traffic, but that’s true of just about anywhere in greater L.A. Bus routes run along the borders of the neighborhood, most frequently on Lakewood Boulevard, which offers connections to Lakewood and central Long Beach.

Pan American Park

Heartwell Park contains miles of walking trails and numerous athletic fields, as well as a public golf course for those who don’t want to pay dues at nearby Lakewood Country Club. Pan American Park, offers a few acres of greenspace, a baseball diamond and basketball courts, and a playground. El Dorado Regional Park, the largest green space in Long Beach, is also nearby and features miles of hiking and biking trails.

Lakewood Center shopping and dining

Every home in Lakewood Village is within a mile of a major grocery store like Albertson's, Whole Foods, or Vons. Other amenities are similarly situated. Dozens of large stores like Costco, Nordstrom Rack, multiple CVSs, and for the vintage enthusiast, Long Beach Antiques, are all located less than a quarter mile outside of the neighborhood.. Bordering the neighborhood to the north is Lakewood Center, at one time the largest shopping mall in the country, which offers a huge variety of shopping choices to Village residents.

Three of the neighborhood's four corners feature Thai restaurants—Thai Basil, S.T. Noodle Bar, and Panvimarn Thai Cuisine—and they're all highly rated. Foodies may appreciate fusion restaurant CaliChilli's "unauthentic Indian," while less adventurous eaters are more likely to enjoy the traditional American food served at Dale's Diner, just down the road from CaliChilli. For after-dinner drinks, the popular pub Thirsty Isle offers patrons the no-frills experience of a classic California bar, complete with pool tables, indoor picnic tables, and, of course, limited natural lighting.

LBCC events and entertainment

The Village itself is a pretty sleepy place — it’s more or less the definition of a “bedroom community”—but there are a few entertainment options around the neighborhood. Most of the local entertainment in the neighborhood is going to be found on the Long Beach City College campus. LBCC’s well-respected music program puts on regular concerts, and the college’s football stadium, Veterans Memorial Stadium, is used by a number of high school teams in the area.

Further afield, the theme parks of Anaheim are just a short drive away, as are the many dining and entertainment opportunities of downtown Long Beach. Central Los Angeles itself is a little less accessible, particularly when the highways get backed up, but it’s still a popular option for all-day excursions.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
