Renamed to honor the Tongva people
Formerly the Grant neighborhood of Long Beach, named after Civil War general and President Ulysses S. Grant, Nehyam was renamed with the Tongva word meaning “my friend” in 2021. The neighborhood association worked with the city to codify the name change to honor the tribe that dominated the land almost 10,000 years ago. Home to one of the city’s 18 historic districts and the first in North Long Beach, Nehyam boasts Spanish Colonial Revival homes constructed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. “This is one of the most affordable areas in the city, and it’s also central to a number of freeways,” says Keller Williams Realtor Shannon Jones, who has been serving the area since 1998.
Smaller homes at more affordable price points
Nehyam consists entirely of single-family homes that line quiet, tree-lined streets with sidewalks. Homes were built up in the early 20th century and are on the smaller side; most have two or three bedrooms with about 1,100 square feet.. Most are also single-story houses with driveways, and some have garages. Architectural styles include of-the-era cottages and bungalows, many Spanish-inspired with beige or white stucco and terra cotta roof tiles. They range in price from around $600,000 for 800 square feet and a potential renovation project to over $800,000 for something updated around 1,700 square feet.
Walkable community elementary school
Students in Nehyam are served by Long Beach Unified, a public school district with an A-minus rating from Niche. All three potential schools in the district are graded B-minus, though this district has school choice. Kids can start their education at Grant Elementary, a walkable community school. At Hamilton Middle School, there are opportunities for playing sports and participating in extra-curricular activities such as chess, gardening and art clubs. Students needing assistance with homework assignments can receive help from a certified teacher through the homework helpline, a service available to all students in the district. Students then advance to Jordan High School, which is divided into two campuses; one for ninth graders and then 10th through 12th in another.
Just 10 miles north of downtown Long Beach
Neyham is about 10 miles north of downtown Long Beach via I-710, a drive that can take as long as 45 minutes at rush hour. The neighborhood is bordered by State Route 91, which links to the 710, running south to Long Beach and north to I-5, which links to Los Angeles about 20 miles north, a drive that can take as long as 90 minutes at rush hour. The main thoroughfares are East Artesia Boulevard to the north of Nehyam and South Street to the south, both of which are lined with bus stops. Though most residents rely on a personal vehicle, there are also bus routes along Orange and Cherry Avenues on the eastern and western borders. Residential streets are quiet, with no through traffic. Long Beach Airport is just 5 miles south via Paramount Boulevard.
Business districts along the perimeter
There are shopping and dining opportunities along the neighborhood's perimeter on the main thoroughfares. There is a Big Saver Foods for stocking up on groceries and essentials, in addition to local offerings like J&G Market and Ernestine’s Family Fish Market. Lee’s Sandwiches serves barbecue pork sandwiches and chicken teriyaki bowls, and Douglas Burgers has burritos, tortillas and patty melts with all the fixings. The neighborhood also has pizza places and fast and casual chains such as Church’s Texas Chicken, McDonald’s and Subway.
Nearby public park access
Residents of Nehyam have access to Long Beach’s public recreational areas, including nearly 170 parks and community centers. At Houghton Park, a few blocks west of the neighborhood, kids can explore the playground and skateboarders can practice tricks at the skate park. There are also tennis courts and a baseball and soccer field, and tree-lined paths for walking. The park also includes centers for teens and seniors and an outdoor area for picnic lunches.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
