North Alamitos Beach
Retro Row shopping and dining
North Alamitos Beach encompasses a portion of “Retro Row” along Fourth Street, a restaurant and retail corridor known for its kitschy and eclectic businesses. “There are tons of cool restaurants, shops and vintage stores. It’s got a trendy, hipster vibe,” says Realtor Anthony Walker of Buckingham Investments. Residents can try plant-based dishes at vegan restaurant Seabirds Kitchen or grab a slice of New York-style pizza at Little Coyote. Allison Van Wig, Realtor and broker selling in Long Beach since the 1990s, highly recommends Lola’s Mexican Cuisine. All sorts of cuisines are represented along Fourth Street. Retro Row lives up to its name with a plethora of vintage and antique shops, like Casa, La Bomba and Third Eye Records, lining the corridor. For essentials, residents head to the centrally located Grocery Outlet.A walker's paradise in Long Beach
Walk Score labels this neighborhood a “walker’s paradise,” giving it a score of 94%. Voss agrees, saying, “It's a popular area among people who don’t own cars. You can walk to shops and restaurants. It’s walking distance to the beach.” Voss also says many residents get around by bike, both in the neighborhood and around the beach. Shoreline Way is a bike and walking path that stretches along the ocean and provides great sunset views.Long Beach’s city buses circulate through the neighborhood and around town. “There are stops in the neighborhood. It's a very accessible area for public transportation.” For those who drive, scenic Ocean Boulevard runs along the California coast and past the neighborhood. State Route One and Interstate 710 are nearby as well.
Visiting Los Alamitos Beach
While North Alamitos Beach isn’t quite on the coast, Alamitos Beach is within a mile of the neighborhood. “It’s a very nice beach. We have a breakwater wall, so the waves don’t get too strong. It’s very placid compared to other beaches,” says Van Wig. Locals enjoy soaking up the sun from the white sandy beach or paddleboarding across the calm waters. Friends meet at the public courts for volleyball games, and cyclists ride against the ocean breeze.Entertainment options right in the neighborhood
North Alamitos Beach puts residents near many Long Beach entertainment options. Locals can walk to the Art Theatre of Long Beach, a restored early 20th-century movie house that shows independent and retro films. The Museum of Latin American Art occupies an upper corner of the neighborhood. The museum is a draw to all of Long Beach for its exhibits and events, like workshops and speaker series.Craftsman bungalows and condos
Like much of the city, the neighborhood was primarily built in the 1920s and predominantly features early 20th-century architecture, like Craftsman bungalows with low-pitched rooftops and deep eaves. Because of its sought-after location, many of the homes here have been renovated and refurbished, giving them a contemporary appeal. Or for something even more contemporary, buyers can choose from condos with modern interiors and exterior Spanish features like stucco siding.“It’s very affordable for something that close to the beach,” says Walker. Craftsman bungalows sell between $670,000 and $1 million depending on size and modern upgrades. Condos, prevalent in the area, go from $320,000 to $750,000.
