North Alamitos Beach has a creative flair just minutes from the coast

North Alamitos Beach is one of Long Beach's quirkiest neighborhoods. It’s a bit farther from the coast than the neighboring Alamitos Beach, but you're still in an incredibly walkable area, not far from shopping, dining and the water. Along Fourth Street, the corridor known as Retro Row is iconic for its vintage stores, eclectic boutiques and standout restaurants. In the neighborhood, you can pick up New York-style pizza by the slice or dine at Long Beach’s only Michelin-star restaurant. It’s mostly condo living in this densely packed area, and prices tend to be some of the lowest that you can find within a mile of the shoreline.

Craftsman bungalows and condos at lower prices

With a median sale price just under $500,000, a huge draw to North Alamitos Beach is that it’s less expensive than nearby communities like Bluff Heights, Belmont Heights and Alamitos Beach. “It’s very affordable for something that close to the beach,” says Realtor Anthony Walker of Buckingham Investments. “It’s a little easier to live here,” agrees Dave Shorter, a broker with Dave Shorter Real Estate who has over 15 years of experience in the area. “The prices have come up quite a bit recently, but it’s still reasonable.”

You won't find much yard space here, with multifamily homes and condos sitting wall to wall along the city streets. There are some Craftsman bungalows from the early 1900s sandwiched between larger buildings, but they sell for a premium, from the high $600,000s to $1.4 million. For condos, mid-1900s units can go for as low as the $200,000s, while penthouse suites get into the $900,000s.

High walkability and access to public transportation

While not quite as walkable to downtown as East Village next door, North Alamitos Beach is still very accessible. “It's a popular area among people who don’t own cars. You can walk to shops and restaurants. It’s walking distance to the beach,” says Cynthia Voss, a broker associate with Re/Max who has been selling Long Beach since 1985. Voss also says many residents ride their bikes. With Grocery Outlet right within the neighborhood, it’s easy to run errands, and you can hop on the bus to get anywhere a bit farther away. “There are stops in the neighborhood,” Voss adds. “It's a very accessible area for public transportation.”

Expect difficult parking and city noise

While street parking can be a little easier than in Alamitos Beach proper, it’s still a challenge here. Tight streets, multifamily houses with no designated parking, and visitors coming to Retro Row make finding a spot tough, especially on evenings and weekends. “Think carefully about the location you pick,” Shorter advises. “You’ve got to consider parking, and in certain areas, it’s very noisy. It’s vibrant and alive — it’s city life.”

Retro Row has a vibrant selection of shopping and dining

The portion of Fourth Street known as Retro Row was nicknamed for its high concentration of vintage, antique and thrift stores. “There are tons of cool restaurants, shops and vintage stores. It’s got a trendy, hipster vibe,” Walker says. You can browse albums at Third Eye Records or get your skating supplies at Pigeon’s Roller Skate Shop.

Within the neighborhood, you’ll find dive bars, fast food options and upscale restaurants. Some of the local favorite spots here include:

  • Lola’s Mexican Cuisine: Well-loved staple for contemporary Mexican food
  • Tarantella on 4th: Family-owned Italian eatery with a secret garden back patio
  • Tokyo Noir: Hidden Japanese speakeasy with handcrafted cocktails, lit by red paper lanterns
  • Pike’s Restaurant & Bar: Casual dive bar with a kitschy nautical theme and regular live music
  • Heritage: The only restaurant in Long Beach with a Michelin star, highlighting produce from local farms

Things to do include retro films and yoga classes

This is an active area of the city, with plenty of late-night noise and weekend events. Stay busy at:

  • Art Theatre of Long Beach: Restored early 20th-century movie house that shows independent and retro films
  • Museum of Latin American Art: Gallery and sculpture garden with rotating exhibits, workshops and events like a Dia de las Muertos festival
  • Alamitos Neighborhood Library: Historic building with family-friendly events and a rose garden courtyard
  • Bixby Park: Public park with sports facilities, a weekly farmers market and free daily yoga classes, just a few blocks away

Visiting the shores of Alamitos Beach

Pretty much every property in North Alamitos Beach is within a mile of the Pacific Coast. Alamitos Beach is known for having calmer waters than the more west-facing shorelines around Huntington Beach or South Bay, and it borders the main port of Long Beach. “It's not for everybody — but I enjoy the breakwater because a lot of people can go out swimming and paddleboarding,” Shorter says. “And I love that there are cargo ships and cruise ships going by. There’s activity, and it feels alive and social.” The paved Shoreline Bike Path is a popular walking and biking trail that connects along the city’s coastline.
