A neighborhood near local businesses
Recreation Park is a neighborhood that’s grown with the city but hasn’t left its roots behind. Here, residents live in older homes surrounded by newer Long Beach businesses. While it is not a historic neighborhood, many original homes built nearly a century ago are still inhabited. Residents also have the luxury of being right next to one of Long Beach’s largest parks, as well as the city’s thriving commercial district.

Neighborhood is bordered by Recreation Park
The neighborhood gets its name from Recreation Park, which sits in the eastern half of the community. The 210-acre refuge is home to the Billie Jean King Tennis Center and two public golf courses - one that is nine holes and another full 18-hole course. “Valter Paiva Tennis Academy at the park has crazy good tennis classes for all ages,” says Realtor Shannon Paul of Zaia Estates. There’s also a community center that offers arts and wellness classes to all ages. The park also hosts a handful of events, like the Long Beach Good Habits Festival. Not to be left out, there’s also a Recreation Dog Park.

Older homes and newer condos in east Long Beach
“The neighborhood itself is this really nice mix of 1950s homes and Spanish bungalows,” Paul says. The different architectural styles tell a story of the neighborhood’s development. Older Craftsman homes, selling from $700,000 to $900,000, sit side by side with Spanish bungalows, selling from $775,000 to $930,000. “A lot of the homes are older, but they’re really nice,” says Edgar Rangel, resident and Realtor at KW Pacific Estates La Mirada. “It might be a little pricer than some north Long Beach neighborhoods, but it’s not as expensive as some south Long Beach neighborhoods.” As the neighborhood continues to evolve to meet the needs of modern-day buyers, condos selling from $400,000 to $560,000 are becoming more commonplace in the neighborhood.

Anaheim Street shopping and dining
Outside of the park, there is still plenty to do, especially for those looking to shop or get something to eat. “It’s a convenient area,” says Rangel. “It’s close to a lot of restaurants and businesses.” Anaheim Street, one of Recreation Park's main thoroughfares, is an eclectic mix of businesses, from stores like quirky comic shop Pulp Fiction to chains like Walgreens and Food 4 Less. This commercial artery offers easy access to a wide range of restaurants, from the popular Thai restaurant Chiang Rai to the classic Colombian spot Selva. Residents are close to some nightlife, like at the laid-back tiki bar, The Bamboo Club, and Alex’s Bar, a punk rock music venue and bar. Chain favorites like El Pollo Loco and McDonald’s are also available here.

Residents can easily hop on the highway to travel anywhere in Long Beach, or head 26 miles north to Los Angeles. St. Mary’s Medical Center is 3 miles to the west.
