Mountainous small community overlooking Chattanooga
High above Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain is a small residential community tucked between the dense forests and widely known tourist destinations which carpet the mountain’s slopes. Networks of lesser-traveled hiking and biking trails supplement tourist attractions like the underground waterfalls at Ruby Falls and the views of the Tennessee River at Point Park. The shared outdoors spaces, local elementary school and small district of local businesses off Scenic Highway build a connected, small-town feeling for residents. “It’s a town with stop signs but no stop lights,” says Katherine Smith, a Realtor with the Mountain Girls Team who was born and raised on Lookout Mountain. “Kids can bike or walk to the elementary school, and it’s only a 15-minute drive to downtown Chattanooga.” Just 7 miles from Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain allows residents to access urban amenities without losing the quiet residential streets and scenic vistas which define life on the mountain.

Hiking paths, The Town Common and golf
Rising 2,000 feet above sea level, Lookout Mountain is a well-known tourist destination for hikers, zipliners and cave explorers year-round. “Point Park and Ruby Falls are places to bring visiting friends or family, but locals don’t go there all the time,” says Smith. “People living on the Tennessee and Georgia sides will go hiking to Sunset Rock and biking on trails in Georgia. It functions as one big community.” Outdoor enthusiasts can route hikes through interconnected trails to scenic overlooks of Lookout Valley or designated climbing areas around the mountain, providing options for intense and casual outdoor recreation.
For a break from the trails, residents head to The Town Common, a central community park home to a playground, ball fields, tennis courts and soccer field. Over the border in Georgia is the Lookout Mountain Club, a private club which many residents join for amenities ranging from a mountaintop golf course to aquatics and pickleball facilities.

Mixes of mountaintop housing styles
Lookout Mountain’s housing options are diverse in build, filling winding, wooded residential roads atop the mountain with styles popular throughout the 20th century, as well as a handful of newer builds. Expansive custom builds in historic and picturesque styles from colonial revival to Tudor revival sprawl on small, landscaped acreages for between $1 million to $3 million. Similar home styles with lower square-footage on less than half an acre of land sell for $500,000 to $750,000. A handful of condos built in the 70s and 80s along Scenic Highway are also available, selling for $290,000 to $700,000 depending on which community it belongs to. Regardless of style or size, Lookout Mountain homes typically boast proximity to scenic views over the mountain’s edge or into tranquil forests.

Shopping and dining along Scenic Highway
For essentials, locals typically drive down Scenic Highway or Ochs Highway to stores at the base of the mountain. Publix, Walgreens and Food City are significant players among the chains lining Tennessee Avenue and Broad Street. Atop the mountain, Market on the Mountain supplies deli sandwiches and a handful of essentials to fill in the gaps between shopping trips. In that same small stretch of businesses, Massey’s Kitchen serves authentic Mediterranean food in a modern, brightly lit dining room beside the local post office.
