Coastal living in the artistic and iconic Venice community

Tucked between Marina Del Ray and Santa Monica, Venice joins its famed neighbors and is in the league of one of the most iconic beachside communities along the West Coast. As a renowned free-spirit, Venice is home to a lively surfing and skating scene, the myriad street performances that crowd the bohemian Venice Boardwalk, famed shops along Abbot Kinney Boulevard, reputable farm-to-table restaurants and a lifestyle centered around wellness and the outdoors. Venice has a laidback and inclusive character that welcomes people from all walks of life, and its artsy, chic and edgy personality has made many artists, designers, sports enthusiasts and progressive professionals call it home. “Venice is really a soulful artist community and the creative mecca of Los Angeles,” says Tami Pardee, founder of Pardee Properties, which was ranked as the top sales team on the Westside by The Wall Street Journal, and the Life Change Warriors foundation. “It’s weird and fun, and it’s a place for real people where you can be yourself.”

Eclectic beachside homes in Venice

Echoing the creative spirit of the neighborhood, Venice homes often have small courtyards and are painted in a kaleidoscope of colors, ranging from shades of green, blue, aquamarine and yellow, contrasted by neutrals of white, terra cotta and beige. Craftsman bungalows are often spotted alongside Spanish Revivals, duplexes and multi-unit buildings, adding diversity to Venice’s landscape. Home prices start around $1 million for a 1,000-square-foot beach cottage or a surf shack from the 1950s, and the entry point for two-story properties is $2 million and may climb to about $4 million. Contemporary villas over 3,000 square feet tend to have open floor plans, large glass panels, backyard pools and views of the waterfront or the canals, and these homes may list up to $6 million.

I have been living in Venice for about 2 years now and I can say that it has its pros and cons. Venice has a reputation for being dirty but seems to be trying to clean up the area. Lincoln is the main road that has most of the traffic along with Venice and Washington. Being about 2 miles from the beach is great but with the amount of tourists in the area is just a nuisance. A lot of crime usually involves the homeless. I cant see raising a family in this type of area with all the commotion in the community. Real estate is hard to find with prices up on the rise. Venice is a diverse area with plenty of nightlife. To me, Venice is a place for tourists and wealthy individuals.

Venice used to be a sleepy beach town, but has now been gentrified. The good part of that is that there are lots of cool restaurants and shops. The bad news is that the cost of living has skyrocketed. Visit Venice, but don't get your hopes up about living there.

Venice is a prime area in that it is close to a lot of great restaurants and locations. Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, the Grove, Downtown Culver City, and Sony Pictures are all very close by. However, as for Venice itself, safety is a problem. The neighborhood is not very safe nor very family friendly.

I love this town in LA! I visited there on a Friday night and had dinner on the beach at a small restaurant! It was great! I love to people watch and there was ton of people to watch! There were alot of homeless people moving in to spend the night as the night grew later. Beach is beautiful!
