Vermont Vista
Vermont Vista’s unique and colorful bungalows
Small to mid-sized bungalows show off their colorful facades and quirky designs, which add style to Vermont Vista’s residential streets. Find a variety of homes with pastel exteriors or those that embrace Spanish or Mission aesthetics with barrel tile roofing. Most houses have between two and four bedrooms and cost somewhere between $500,000 and $900,000. Decorative iron, stone or wood fences separate these small but green lots from one another, and tile or stone exteriors and gardens with native plants give each house a natural look. Buildings for sale in the area also include several-unit structures for investing in rental properties, which cost upwards of $1 million.Fried chicken food stands and Numero Uno Market
Within Vermont Vista are several little restaurants and stands serving American, Honduran and Mexican cuisine. Happy Times Burgers on South Vermont Avenue offers tacos, burritos, and burgers. "You gotta go there and see it for yourself. The aesthetic is extremely positive, and the hospitality is amazing," Curry says. "They have great service, and you know that the food you're getting is real and natural." Monster Burger is an informal food stand that sells wings, fish and tacos. Numero Uno Market on Figueroa Street is a pastel pink grocery store with everyday essentials and pantry favorites. Jim Dandy Fried Chicken on Vermont Avenue serves fried clams and fries alongside their famous fried chicken, with peach cobbler and banana pudding for dessert. Nearby is Mom’s Bar-B-Q takeaway with sweet potato pies, baked beans and ribs. Louisiana Fried Chicken & Fish down the street is just what it sounds like, with fast food and southern sides. Andy’s Hardware and Superior Grocers are less than 2 miles east of town.Street parks and the Algin Sutton Recreation Center
Algin Sutton Recreation Center has several amenities for playing sports, getting outside and gathering together in town. With tennis and basketball courts, a playground and a stage, this multipurpose space is a community hub. The center also has a public pool where residents can swim laps or cool off on hot California days. The L.A. Kids program, free to area youth since 1996, offers free dance classes at the center. Tucked between buildings and homes are a few small parks, such as 97th Street and 105 Street parks. Supported by the L.A. Parks Foundation nonprofit, these enclosed spaces around town have little playgrounds, sitting areas and native plants. "The purpose of the pocket parks initiative is to substantially increase the number of parks and facilities available across the City, with a specific focus on densely populated neighborhoods and communities that lack sufficient open space and recreational services," says Tony Budrovich, CEO & Executive Director of the Los Angeles Parks Foundation. "Our mission is to enhance, expand, preserve and promote public parks, recreation and open space for the diverse people of Los Angeles."Residential and choice Los Angeles schools
Though there are hundreds of schools in the district, Vermont Vista students attend residential schools within the south region of the district. Depending on their address, students may attend kindergarten through fifth grade at Charles W. Barret Elementary School, graded a C-plus on Niche, or Figueroa Street Elementary School, graded a B-minus. Bret Harte Preparatory Middle School is right within the neighborhood and within walking distance of many homes. Samuel Gompers Middle School is just east of the 110. Both are graded a C. Some high schools in the area fall within the school of choice, so some students may attend John C. Fremont Senior High School to the north or George Washington Preparatory Senior High School southwest of town. Both are graded a B-minus.Nearby amenities and drives to downtown Los Angeles
Vermont Vista locals can travel 9 miles north via South Broadway Street to reach Los Angeles’ bustling downtown, though it may take an hour or more most days to get there. Directly west on West Century Boulevard is the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), about 7 miles away. Though a few medical clinics are nearby along Vermont Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital is 5 miles southeast of town.Vermont Vista Crime
