Family-friendly suburb in the Potomac Falls community
On the easternmost end of Loudoun County, Lowes Island is the kind of Northern Virginia suburban community that could find itself on a Hallmark card. “Every Christmas, neighbors take their kids and walk over to this small evergreen tree on Lowes Island Boulevard and hang an ornament,” says Dina Azzam, area local and Realtor with RE/MAX Distinctive. This family-friendly town, home to 11,000 residents as per the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau, offers highly rated public schools and an abundance of green space. A well-known national golf club sits to the north and two regional parks bookend the town, with the Potomac Trail weaving throughout. The Potomac River flows just north of town, providing water recreation and scenic views. Lowes Island, along with Countryside, makes up part of the Cascades community. “It’s a beautiful and sought-after community,” Azzam says. “You’ll notice that residents are proud of their homes and take amazing care of them, their yards and their neighborhood.”
The Global Tech Solutions manufacturer, TTM Technologies, expanded in Loudoun County in 2024. This facility, 7 miles from Lowes Island, provided hundreds more positions for the area’s already-teeming data and technology industries. “Many residents also work in D.C. and the surrounding areas,” Azzam adds. Algonkian Parkway, the main artery that serves the Cascades community, brings residents to Route 7, a connector for larger thoroughfares throughout the Washington area.

Competitive market with a variety of townhomes and Colonial-styles
Homebuyers can find brick tri-level town homes with attached garages and about a $500 HOA fee overlooking the course of the Trump National Golf Club. “We have a variety of town homes, from smaller sizes with no garage to larger Villa-style sizes,” Azzam adds. “Single-family homes are varied too, depending on buyers’ needs and budgets.” Common single-family housing styles include 2,500- to 4,500-square-foot Colonial-inspired homes with garages originally built in the 1980s that have since been renovated. The median price for a house in Lowes Island is $770,000, much higher than the national median. Homes typically stay on the market for an average of 13 days. Potential buyers should be aware that residential properties near the Potomac River or Sugarland Run are at a higher flood risk than the rest of the area.

Algonkian Regional Park and Trump National Golf Club
Green space, waterways and other recreational opportunities surround Lowes Island's subdivisions and residential lanes. On the west side, Algonkian Regional Park offers 838 acres of athletic fields, a public 18-hole golf course, an 8-mile walking trail and an expansive playground that was renovated in 2024. The park offers cottage rentals and canoe launch areas into the Potomac River and Sugarland Run. Also on site is Volcano Island Water Park, complete with water slides, splash areas and a pool, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. On the east side of Lowes Island, Seneca Regional Park features a 4.5-mile wooded and gravel trail that loops through the wilderness.
Taking up the northern part of town, Trump National Golf Club, formerly called Lowes Island Club before Donald Trump purchased it in 2009, is a private golf club that also includes a tennis center, outdoor pool and fitness facility. Lowes Island Community Center, centrally located in town, features a fitness center inside and a basketball court, tennis court and pool outside. The community center, which hosts several events for residents throughout the year, is part of the Cascades Community Association, which requires an HOA affiliation for membership.

Local shops and eateries at Great Falls Plaza
The highly trafficked intersection of Algonkian Parkway and Lowes Island Boulevard features Great Falls Plaza, a retail area with Food Lion, Walgreens, retail storefronts, salons, fitness studios, an animal hospital and a variety of eateries. “You will always run into neighbors or people you know at these places,” Azzam says. Coldspoon Coffee is a trendy local cafe that, in addition to coffee, offers breakfast sandwiches and a yogurt bowl station. Velocity Wings is a sports bar with an elevated pub menu, live music and karaoke nights. Also near this busy intersection is Potomac Baptist Church, which provides members with different community groups, including children’s ministries.
Azzam mentions that residents are a short drive away from a multitude of shopping centers and recreational hubs. “Downtown Reston is less than 5 miles away, with restaurants, a movie theater and a winter skating rink,” Azzam says. “We can also drive out to Western Loudoun to enjoy trails, wineries and breweries.”
