Lutherville is a family-friendly suburb north of Baltimore
Winding subdivisions with spacious homes and wooded yards, businesses along York Road and spacious parks like Loch Raven Reservoir make Lutherville a community with a little bit of everything. Just 13 miles north of downtown Baltimore, this comfortable suburb is convenient for commuters and families. “Lutherville is one of those communities that has so much for so many,” says Dara Lewis, Realtor at The Pinnacle Real Estate Company and Lutherville resident. “I’ve seen that people who grew up here are now coming back to the area to purchase homes. Whether because of the swim club, because of the trails, or because of the proximity to the interstate to head south into the city.” Unified under a single ZIP code, Lutherville and neighboring Timonium are sometimes considered a single community. “It depends on who you ask,” Lewis says. Both enjoy similar amenities and distance to the city.
Historic and newer homes attract buyers to the community
Lutherville’s winding subdivisions tend to have tidy landscaping and wide, flat roads lined with sidewalks. Styles vary from well-preserved historic properties to spacious new houses. Homebuyers can typically expect to pay between $300,000 and $650,000 for Cape Cods, ranch-styles, bi-levels and split levels built in the latter half of the 20th century. Some spacious contemporary properties can sell for higher, ranging from about $700,000 to over $2 million. Lutherville’s Historic District has homes built in the 1800s, including Victorian and traditional styles. These come up for sale infrequently but have historically gone for between $700,000 and $1 million. “Houses usually don’t stay on the market for very long in this area if it’s priced accordingly. Most sell in under a month,” Lewis says.
Students can attend highly rated Baltimore County Public Schools
Students in Lutherville can attend Baltimore County Public Schools and may begin at Lutherville Laboratory Elementary School, which earns a B-plus from Niche. Students typically continue to A-minus-rated Ridgely Middle School and A-rated Towson High School. Towson High is home to the law and public policy magnet program. Students admitted into the program take courses including constitutional law and public policy. Lutherville is also just 2 miles north of Towson University, a public institution with over 19,000 graduate and undergraduate students.
Locally owned restaurants and big box stores on York Road
Businesses line York Road in Lutherville and include Aldi, Kohl’s and Starbucks. York Road also has restaurants like Ocean Pride, serving seafood like oysters and crab imperial, and The Peppermill, with upscale American dishes like filet mignon and lobster tail on the menu. “There are so many different experiences, and it’s all right there. You could walk if you wanted to,” Lewis says. “And the exciting thing is a lot of these places are locally owned.”
Peaceful water at Loch Raven Reservoir and more outdoor spaces
Loch Raven Reservoir provides drinking water to Baltimore, and it’s also used for recreation. Park visitors enjoy views of the sunset over the peaceful water, throw out a fishing line from their boats or hike through the wooded trails. Also nearby, the public Pine Ridge Golf Course has 18 holes bordering the reservoir. Smaller green spaces dot the community, with spots like Orchard Hills Park and Seminary Park offering ball fields and playgrounds. Several private swim clubs are in the area, including Dulaney Swim Club and York Manor. Both have spacious lap pools, separate kiddie pools and a popular swim team.
The Maryland State Fair draws crowds
Lutherville-Timonium hosts the Maryland State Fair, which draws hundreds of thousands of people to the area between late August and early September. The fair features entertainment such as magic shows, live music and goat yoga sessions. Visitors can also enjoy carnival rides, check out art and animal exhibits, and taste local foods. “They have it all,” Lewis says.
Proximity to I-85, I-695 and Lutherville Station expedites commutes
Interstates 83 and 695 border Lutherville, expediting commutes around the region. Downtown Baltimore is about 13 miles south. Commuters can drive into the city or take the light rail from Lutherville Station. The train also goes to Baltimore/Washington International Airport, about 25 miles south. The Greater Baltimore Medical Center is just 3 miles south of Lutherville in Towson and is one of several nearby hospitals.
