Suburban living and outdoor amenities in eastern St. Paul
Named after a stream that flows into the Mississippi River, the Maplewood suburb of Battle Creek West offers residents a neighborhood centered around an outdoor lifestyle. Home to Battle Creek Regional Park, this namesake 750-acre greenspace is where residents can hike, bike or cross-country ski. “Battle Creek is quiet and serene,” says Peter Salazar, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “The park is a huge draw and there’s great shopping and excellent dining options also nearby.” Shared amenities like ice skating at Shawnee Park in winter and cooling off at the park's waterworks area in summer, means communal fun all year-round. With a thriving outdoor scene and a 6-mile commute into downtown, Battle Creek West has plenty to offer on the eastern outskirts of St. Paul.

Mid-century ramblers and split-level designs
The real estate market in Battle Creek West is attractive for its affordable pricing and proximity to Battle Creek Regional Park. “Homes are generally smaller with entry-level pricing,” says Salazar who has been selling in the area for over 6 years. “Most homes go from $200,000 to $300,000, competing against multiple offers.” Most homes were constructed in the 1950s, resulting in mid-century ramblers, Cape Cods and split-level styles common of this era. With a median sales price of $315,000, homes here tend to cost $100,000 less than the average property in the Minneapolis metro area. For example, prices in Battle Creek West can range from $200,000 for a three-bedroom vinyl-sided rambler to upwards of $400,000 for a four-bedroom split-level with updated amenities. Most homes also feature mid-sized lawns with shrubbery and paved driveways leading to multi-car garages. Major thoroughfares, like U.S. Interstate-94 and Century Avenue feed into this community's wide tree-lined residential streets. Despite having no sidewalks, neighbors benefit from a 25-mile-per-hour speed limit for added safety when navigating throughout the community.

For some time outdoors, Battle Creek Regional Park is the primary gathering space for this neighborhood. Visitors enjoy a mulched playground, an off-leash dog area, 3 miles of paved biking trails and picnic tables situated throughout the park. The waterworks area is a popular spot to cool off in the summer and features water slides, an ankle-deep pool, sprinklers and fountains of all shapes and sizes. “The park is undoubtedly the main attraction in the area,” says Casper Hill, Ramsey County Public Information Officer. “In the winter, it becomes the east metro hub for cross-country skiing as it's the only location east of the Mississippi that has snow-making capabilities.” The Battle Creek Recreation Center is also located here, hosting a range of youth and adult programs from basketball and soccer to tennis and volleyball. Afton Heights Park is north of Upper Afton Road, offering sports fields and trails linking to nearby neighborhoods. Another option is Shawnee Park, which features a jungle gym, fishing pier and paved paths with waterfront views of Battle Creek Lake. In the winter, the city maintains an outdoor ice rink here and also provides warming houses which are open from December to February.
