Central Gardens is an affluent Midtown Memphis neighborhood
Central Gardens is located in an affluent part of Midtown, a larger community in Memphis known for its 19th- and early-20th-century homes, as well as its vibrant art and dining scenes. Residents live close to restaurants, bars and a few theaters, all within a historic district that preserves the character of its older homes. “All of Midtown has very unique styles of homes. No two homes are alike, but Central Gardens has some of the largest homes in Midtown,” says Paige Arnold, vice president of Crye-Leike Realtors Inc.’s East Memphis office. "It just has some incredible homes on large lots. A lot of these homes have been featured in movies and just have gorgeous architecture and landscaping." Central Gardens appeared in movies like “The Firm” and “Walk the Line,” and was once home to baseball great Bill Terry and former Memphis mayor and influential Tennessee politician E.H. “Boss” Crump.
Housing ranges from bungalows to upscale Tudor and Colonial Revivals
Tall, mature oak trees surround homes and line the streets in Central Gardens. Some cars are parked on the roads, and residents are often out on strolls and walking their dogs. One of the main roads here, Belvedere Boulevard, has grassy medians with trees and manicured flower beds. The Belvedere area has several upscale homes with Greek, Colonial Revival and Mediterranean designs. Other typical houses in the neighborhood include American Foursquares, Craftsman bungalows, Tudor Revivals and Victorian homes. Many homes are between 1,500 and 3,500 square feet and sell from $220,000 to $560,000. Larger homes mostly go from $620,000 to $870,000, while some can sell for over $1 million. Apartments make up about a third of Central Gardens, and just over half of the neighborhood's residents rent.
Nearby Cooper-Young has bar fare and seafood
In the morning, many can grab some sweet treats from Midtown Donuts. In neighboring Cooper-Young, Young Avenue Deli has been a longtime destination for nighttime beers, fries and other menu favorites, like its foot-long hot dog. The dimly-lit venue is a popular spot for pool games and live music. Celtic Crossing is another institution that serves traditional Irish fare and over 100 whiskeys. Those looking for fine dining, seafood and wines may go to Tsunami, which Arnold says is “the best restaurant in Memphis, in my opinion.” Chain stores close to Central Gardens include The Fresh Market, Kroger and Home Depot.
Students may attend several schools and earn college credits
Depending on where they live, students may go to different public elementary and middle schools. Schools serving the neighborhood include Bruce Elementary and Bellevue Middle, both of which get C grades from Niche. The other schools are Idlewild Elementary and Hamilton Middle. Idlewild receives a B-plus, while Hamilton gets a C-minus. All students here may finish at Central High School, which gets a B-minus. Central is one of the district’s optional schools, which many across the Memphis area seek out for more advanced coursework. Central has a college preparatory program and allows students to earn dual credits from institutions like Southwestern Tennessee Community College and the University of Memphis.
The neighborhood is near a signature Memphis park
Central Gardens is a few miles south of Overton Park, which notably has the Memphis Zoo and one of Tennessee’s few surviving old-growth forests. Daily visitors to the roughly 340-acre park include dog walkers, picnickers and families who want to let their children burn off energy on the open spaces and playgrounds. Joggers and cyclists may get on several miles of trails winding through woods, with many poplar and oak trees. The zoo has over 3,000 animals ranging from reptiles and marine life to big cats, primates and large land mammals. Central Gardens has the private University Club of Memphis, an invitation-only organization with tennis and pool facilities.
Traditions include the July 4th parade and annual home tour
Neighborhood celebrations include its July 4th Parade, which allows residents to get free hot dogs and see decorated floats, costumed pets and even horseback riders. Another community tradition is September’s Home & Garden Tour, which offers a rare opportunity for many to see inside the neighborhood’s homes. “It draws thousands into the area every fall,” Arnold says. “It’s a really big deal.”
Commuters have quick access to Union and I-69
While residents can easily access several MATA bus stops, Memphis is mainly a commuter city. Union Avenue provides a direct path to downtown Memphis, less than 5 miles west. The neighborhood is about 1 mile east of Interstate 69, which provides a route south toward Mississippi or other parts of the Memphis metro area. Located 1 mile west, the Methodist University Hospital offers services like emergency and heart care. Central Garden is less than 10 miles north of the Memphis International Airport, which many across West Tennessee and Northern Mississippi go to for air travel.
