A suburb known for lofty trees and attractive architecture
The Memphis community of Greentrees delivers what its name promises. Large, lush trees tower over the community’s generously sized lots. While exclusively residential, the neighborhood is less than 2 miles from grocery stores, restaurants and one of the largest city parks in the country: Shelby Farms Park. This massive recreational area -- which could contain Central Park several times over -- keeps residents busy weekend after weekend. “It’s extremely popular. I think we have a lot to offer in Memphis,” says Realtor Pam Pierce of Ware Jones Realtors. Well-maintained homes built in the 1970s line the streets, striking a balance between reliable older construction and the Colonial Revival aesthetic.
True to its name, Greentrees' streets are lined with large shade trees.

Unique 1970s Colonial Revivals
Greentrees’ streets bob and weave just south of Poplar Avenue, the closest thoroughfare. Tall, mature trees appear in nearly every yard, more useful for a decorative touch than shade. Narrow sidewalks are ubiquitous, making it easy to take the dog for a walk. Most lots easily average one quarter of an acre, on which rest architectural examples like Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes. Home buyers will find three-bedroom homes that sell for between $250,000 and $300,000, while four- and five-bedroom homes reach as high as $575,000.

Shelby Farms Park, the pinnacle of fun
Greentrees has one small park on its south end: Holmes Park. In addition to a small playground, the park offers a wooded retreat split by a creek. Residents who want a much larger green space can drive a mile-and-a-half to Shelby Farms Park, anchored by Hyde Lake. Provided they have a license, folks can fish the lake for species like crappie. The recreational space around the lake is large -- more than 7 square miles, which is five times the size of Central Park in New York. About 40 miles of trails take hikers across its acreage, with highlights along the way like Battlefront Lasertag and Paintball. The park’s wide-open spaces are ideal for a match between two teams. There’re also woodland excursions like axe-throwing, ziplines and treetop climbing for various age groups. Go Ape! is the proprietor of these activities, and this is their only location in the state.

A meal just outside the community
There are no restaurants in the neighborhood because it’s strictly residential, but bites to eat are still close by. Less than 1 mile north, residents will stumble upon the Kroger-anchored shopping center. The grocery store has its own pharmacy, so filling prescriptions is as convenient as grabbing groceries. Laidback spots like TJ Mulligans and Café Med share this parking lot, which serve Irish pub food and sandwiches, respectively. “I think we have fabulous restaurants in Memphis,” says Pierce. Some fast-food spots appear too, so residents can get a meal in a hurry.

Residents can make the 13-mile drive in about 20 minutes with good traffic. Saint Francis Hospital is just 2 miles away, or a 6-minute hop by car.
