Waterfront living in the heart of the Lakes Region
Just north of the city of Laconia, Meredith is one of the most visited towns in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The community is a mix of seasonal homeowners and forever residents who seek that quintessential New England lake life. “People choose Meredith for its surroundings,” says Nancy Williams, a broker with Roche Realty Group. With glacial Lake Winnipesaukee, spring-fed Lake Winnisquam and Lake Waukewan bordering the community, water can be accessed from just about anywhere. A few small islands are scattered on the lake, including the popular summer camp destination of Bear Island. There are also scenic hiking trails tucked deep into the forests, where maple trees come to life each autumn. While much of the area is waterside or quiet woodlands, a small town center features hotels, restaurants and shops. “There is a touristy section with nice hotels and boutiques,” Williams says. “The traffic picks up in the summer, and it gets more crowded.” U.S. Route 3 weaves through this downtown area and leads to Laconia about 10 miles south.
The town of Meredith was established in 1768.

Both sunny and frozen fun on Meredith Bay
Meredith’s town center is home to a few community parks, including Prescott Park. This park features a playground, a variety of athletic courts and fields, an ice skating rink and a skate park. On Meredith Bay, Hesky Park provides a public boat launch and hosts outdoor concerts each Friday night all summer long. And when the snow falls or the bay freezes over, this part of Meredith stays active with wintertime activities. “There’s pond hockey on Meredith Bay, which attracts people from all over,” Williams says. “They also have an ice fishing derby and a sled dog race through the town.” On the Lake Waukewan side of the community, there’s public boating access to the lake. Deeper into the forests of Meredith, Waukewan Highlands Community Park offers 3 miles of trails used for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Even farther south from the downtown area, Hamlin-Eames-Smyth Forest has 700 acres of preserved land and miles of hiking trails.

Dining with a view at Meredith’s town center
Nestled between Meredith Bay and Lake Waukewan is a small, walkable downtown area full of boutiques, inns and eateries. The Mill Falls Marketplace is an al fresco shopping area with candy stores, niche clothing shops, vintage storefronts and cafes. Many restaurants feature patios that provide waterfront views of Lake Winnipesaukee, including Lakehouse Grille, an upscale lodge that serves American cuisine. Town Docks, only open during the summer months, offers seafood, and Lago is a more laid-back Italian bistro. In this Main Street section of Meredith is the popular Hermit Woods Winery, which also serves meads and ciders and hosts frequent live music. Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant is another local spot that dishes up classic American lunches and dinners. For groceries, Hannaford is conveniently located in this town center. Nearby, Meredith Library is in a Classic Revival building from 1900, sitting next to First Baptist Church, one of the several Christian houses of worship in the community.

Scenic rides on ships, trains and motorcycles
Meredith neighbors the Weirs Beach area, a tourist destination with sandy shores, a boardwalk and a pier that juts out onto Lake Winnipesaukee. The town of Meredith includes a few small islands on the lake, with Bear Island being the most well-known. This patch of land is where Camp Nokomis is held, a two-week summer camp for different youth groups. “There’s a mail boat that leaves from Weirs Beach and drives out to the island to deliver mail,” Williams says. “The kids at camp run out to the water and cheer as they watch the boat come in.” Visitors can board the Mount Washington cruise ship from Weirs Beach and take a scenic two-and-a-half-hour ride around Lake Winnipesaukee. Another popular adventure that boards in Meredith is the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad, which offers a picturesque two-hour lakeside train ride to and from Laconia. And the highly anticipated Laconia Motorcycle Week, held annually each June, brings hundreds of thousands of bikers to the city and surrounding communities, including Meredith.
