Leonardo home prices and water views draw new residents
Leonardo, which sits along Sandy Hook Bay with the Manhattan skyline in the near distance, is a primarily residential Jersey Shore community. Lisa English, a broker associate at O’Brien Realty - English Properties Team, says the area's price point is attractive for new residents. "In Leonardo, you can get homes for under $600,000," she says. Homes with three bedrooms and two or three bathrooms tend to fall within the $600,000 range or even less, while larger homes start to rise in cost. For homes by the water, including newly built ones, be prepared to spend upward of $1.5 million. Living in Leonardo means "you can get to New York City very quickly," English says. So whether you need to commute into the city daily or want a night out on the town, you can get there from Leonardo without sacrificing spacious beach living.
Popular restaurants here follow in Restaurant Nicholas' footsteps
Start your day with a cup of joe from Jersey Coffee Roasters. Or if coffee isn't your breakfast drink of choice, enjoy a cup of tea or matcha. At Pizzeria De Leonardo, dive into a classic pie or step outside the box and try a chicken marsala, taco salad or stuffed vegetable pie. Head into the greater township area to try out even more beloved local spots. One such place is Barrel & Roost. From the minds behind Restaurant Nicholas (which Zagat ranked as the highest-rated restaurant in New Jersey for 15 years in a row) comes Barrel & Roost in the same space. The white tablecloths are gone in this modern farmhouse interior, where neighbors like to meet for dinner and drinks. The menu here mixes some favorites from Restaurant Nicholas among its creations. Locals also flock to Big Mike's Little Red Store, a breakfast-and-lunch spot in a former 1860s general store, where you can enjoy breakfast classics and deli sandwiches crafted by a former chef from Restaurant Nicholas.
Middletown High School North students can pursue associate degrees
Local kids can attend the Middletown Township Public School District, which Niche describes as an above-average school system, ranking it in the top 20 for best New Jersey school districts for athletes and in the top 100 for New Jersey school districts with the best teachers. The district divides its students among 11 elementary schools, like Leonardo Elementary, before sending them to three middle schools, such as Bayshore Middle, and then finally to two high schools. At Middletown High School North, students can earn an associate degree from Brookdale Community College while earning their high school diploma. High school students can also apply to one of Monmouth County's five specialty high schools focusing on communications, health sciences, biotechnology, marine science and engineering.
Relaxing at Leonardo Beach or setting out onto Leonardo Bay
For a serene beach day any time of year, walk over to Leonardo Beach. Spend your day reading by the water or catching a tan. In Leonardo Bay, you can charter a boat for fishing and launch from the Leonardo State Marina. After the beach, shoot hoops or run around the playground at Bill Kunkel Memorial Park. A portion of the Henry Hudson Trail runs through Leonardo. Walk along this relatively flat trail as it meanders through trees, near wetlands and streams. Or, take the path to nearby Atlantic Highlands for nightlife and restaurants, says English.

I have lived here for 22 years, raised my child here. The school system is very good and it's a neighborhood. People on my street wave hello, neighbors help each other. It's what you want when raising a family. It's very safe and close to the beach as well as NYC. It's only an hour and a half to Philly too. Very grateful to live here.
