A modest suburb with access to conveniences
Grantosa is a quiet Milwaukee suburb that attracts first-time homebuyers for its retail conveniences and home prices. “It is very affordable. There are a lot of great mid-century homes, which are very popular right now,” says Realtor Ruth Robertson, who sells houses in the neighborhood with M3 Realty. “There are a lot of shops and restaurants within about five minutes, which makes it a desirable location.” Residents enjoy the properties for their spacious backyards, which are ideal for cookouts. In the evenings, folks often stroll the sidewalks while their kids bike on the streets, which have very little through traffic. Most residents are renters.

Mid-century homes for less than $300,000
“Home prices have increased at about the same rate as the national average,” Robertson says. Homebuyers can purchase a one-bedroom 1970s brick condo for $80,000 or a two-bedroom 1980s brick condo for $130,000. Three-bedroom 1950s ranch-style houses sell for between $220,000 and $320,000. Assessors value a 1950s three-bedroom brick bungalow at around $170,000. Three-bedroom 1960s brick-and-wood-exterior bi-level homes sell for between $260,000 and $290,000. “Often with these houses, there are family rooms beneath ground level, which gives the homes additional space,” Robertson says.
