Commuter convenience on the edge of Menomonee Falls
Mill Valley has a convenient location where Milwaukee meets Menomonee Falls. The name "Mill Valley" comes from a condominium complex many residents call home. However, there are also a few single-family properties in the Heritage Heights subdivision. The neighborhood is miles from any city hub, but with two major highways rushing through, it has some commuter convenience. "It's literally right next to the access point to Interstate 41, which will get you to Milwaukee and the Waukesha area pretty quickly," says experienced Realtor Micah Jensen of Premier Point Realty. "And you also get everything that comes with Menomonee Falls — all the different types of restaurants, bowling alleys and dog parks," Jensen adds.

Condo communities and contemporary suburban options
Most of the neighborhood's residents live in Mill Valley Homes, a condominium development just south of Appleton Avenue. Its rectangular buildings feature units with roughly 600 to 1,000 square feet, and prices from $75,000 to $180,000. Each building centers around an outdoor courtyard with seating and gas grills. "It's got two different pools, so it's nice that you don't have to go across the whole development to go swimming," Jensen says. Residents can also access wooded trails, tennis courts, a community clubhouse and heated underground parking. East of Interstate 41, Heritage Heights is made of single-family homes built in the early 2000s. With New Traditional architecture and floor plans often exceeding 2,000 square feet, this upscale suburb has room to spread out. Prices here range from $400,000 to $600,000. The Mill Valley area overall gets a 3 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, lower than the surrounding Milwaukee neighborhoods, which can range from a 4 out of 10 to an 8 out of 10.

Highway access and job opportunities
Mill Valley sits around the intersection of Appleton Avenue and Interstate 41. While this means that travel in all directions is direct, there is some road noise in the area — especially for homes that border I-41. This side of the city is known for its suburban enclaves tucked between manufacturing warehouses, industrial buildings and car dealerships. So, there are plenty of job opportunities within a mile radius. For those heading into the city for work or entertainment, downtown Milwaukee is about 12 miles away, a trip that takes 20 to 45 minutes. Pick n Save Marketplace is about 2 miles away up Appleton Avenue, and there's also a Costco about 5 miles away. And Milwaukee Mitchell Airport is about 23 miles away, on the other side of the city.
You can get from Mill Valley to anywhere in the world from Mitchell Airport.

Agricultural options for public schools
Milwaukee Public Schools has an open choice system, so parents can choose any Milwaukee school — and even apply outside their district. The next-door Menomonee Falls School District draws a lot of parents with an overall A grade from Niche, compared to MPS's overall C. But admission can be competitive. Within Milwaukee, nearby schools include Maple Tree School and River Trail School. Both get a C-minus rating from Niche and serve kindergarten through eighth-grade students. At River Trail, kids experience an agriculture-focused and (quite literally) open learning environment without interior walls, fostering a constant connection between all grade levels. The closest high school is Vincent High School of Agricultural Sciences, which offers specialty programs from animal sciences to culinary arts. Niche gives the school a D-plus. For a private, faith-based option, Milwaukee Seventh-day Adventist School sits within the neighborhood and serves grades kindergarten through 10th grade.

Local restaurants where customers become family
There are no options for dining out within the neighborhood. But just a mile up Appleton Avenue, Ally's Bistro is a family-owned diner with a big heart. Their busiest nights come on Friday when the chef whips up a beer-batter fish fry and a seafood special. Local bands set up for a live music night, and the usual seat-yourself dining area becomes a fancier table service. When asked what people love most about Ally's, the co-owner Michelle Zimmerman said it was their commitment to friendly service. "People are coming into our home, so we treat them as guests — I don't like the word customer," she says. "Eventually, we hope our guests start to become family." Ally's also delivers to the next-door Three Cellars, which has a rotating selection of beer and wine. For more beer tasting, the Third Space Innovation Brewhouse joined the small restaurant hub in June 2024. The brewery has a business strategy focused on becoming that "third space" to visit besides work and home. They aim to achieve that goal with an outdoor patio, sports screens and regular community events.

Green space geared towards dogs and golfers
Just north of Mill Valley is Granville Dog Park, which Milwaukee County Parks describes as "Disneyland for dogs." Dogs enjoy exploring the 10 acres of natural land on wooded trails or dipping in the creek to beat the heat. But be careful after it rains, it can get quite muddy. For more outdoor fun, the North Hills Country Club invites members to tee off on a golf course that's hosted every major Wisconsin tournament. The club, which also has a pool and dining options, is just 2 miles up Appleton Avenue. For golfers who want a more affordable option, the public Dretzka Golf Course is 3 miles away. Dretzka Park also has a disc golf course, picnic areas and a sledding hill. Other community gathering places include local houses of worship. New Restoration Christian Church is right within the neighborhood and has childcare services and faith-based events.
