Small-town energy in a big city
In the melting pot of east side Milwaukee, young meets old, activity meets peace and many people find their place in Murray Hill, a neighborhood that borrows a bit of charm from those surrounding it. Close to the university, a large hospital and employers downtown, the area is a popular choice for students and young professionals. Though many renters live in the neighborhood, stunning Victorian and Colonial Revival single-family homes bring in families and retirees looking for a permanent place to call home. Sandwiched between Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee River and within walking distance of both, residents connect with nature as often as they connect with one another. "Murray Hill is close to everything, and you can always find something going on in the neighborhood or nearby," says Dalton Collins, a resident and employee of Café Hollander, a prominent restaurant in the neighborhood. "But we keep the small-town energy usually lost being so close to a big city. There are good people here."

Grand homes, preserved as single-families or divided by landlords
Renters make up most of the people living in Murray Hill, either in one of the many large apartment buildings or in a duplex or multi-family home. "There's a natural progression," says Zac Higgins, a former neighborhood resident who works there. "Murray Hill is mostly for college kids and a younger professional crowd. The neighborhoods around it are where people transition once they get older and want to build community." However, many people find their permanent homes in the neighborhood - in the grand Queen Anne Victorians, American Foursquares, Colonial Revivals and Tudor-inspired houses built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. "There are some exceptional houses in Murray Hill with character, charm and artistic aspects that you can't find in new homes," says Judy Hearst, broker associate with Coldwell Banker with over 38 years of real estate experience. Architectural styles remain the same between multi- and single-family homes, but the number of units landlords have divided the homes into varies. The multi-families, which have anywhere from two to five units, sell between $300,000 and $724,000. Single-family houses range between $250,000 and $1.2 million. Homes are close together and have narrow yards, often capped with a detached garage followed by an alleyway. Condos are available in the neighborhood, ranging from $115,000 to $380,000. Units in developments from the 1960s are at the lower end of the scale, while those in older buildings from the 1920s and newer buildings from the past few decades are more expensive.

Lake Michigan to the east and the Milwaukee River to the west
Residents enjoy water views at Lake Park, a long and skinny park stretching over 2 miles along Lake Michigan. The park has sports courts and fields, a golf course, bowling greens and scenic lookouts, such as the Northpoint Lighthouse and The Grand Staircase at Lake Park Pavilion. "Lake Park is a real jewel," says Jim Christenson, an agent with First Weber Realtors. "I've lived here 45 years, and sometimes I still find myself walking through parts I didn't know existed." The park is also where seasonal activities occur, like winter ice skating and summer concerts. Between Musical Mondays and Wonderful Wednesdays, 15 free concerts happen at the Park Summer Stage in July and August. Bradford Beach is along the sandy strip of Lake Park and has umbrellas and chairs to reserve, a tiki bar and over 30 sand volleyball courts for leagues and tournaments. Riverside Park is west of Murray Hill and also along the water. Once on the wooded trails around the Milwaukee River, it's easy to feel like it's not a major city since all manmade structures disappear from view. The riverside trails are part of the Oak Leaf Trail, a 135-mile multi-use trail throughout Milwaukee County.

Supporting small businesses along Downer Avenue
Downtown Milwaukee's attractions and restaurants are nearby, but Murray Hill has a few local hot spots that provide some of the small-town charm it's known for. "The shopping along Downer Avenue is a draw," Christenson says. "There are good restaurants and Boswell Book Company, of course. Everyone loves going there." The bookstore has a friendly atmosphere with informative staff picks and comfy reading chairs. Author meet and greets, poetry readings and book discussions are just a few of the weekly events in the store's back seating area. Downer Avenue also has a long-standing hardware store and grocery store where residents can shop locally. After browsing the stores or catching a movie at The Downer Theater, Milwaukee's oldest operating movie theater, locals can stop by Café Hollander for a meal. The two-story restaurant's patio comes to life in the summer with fountains, wicker dining sets and string lights hanging between lamp posts. Like in the Northern European countries that influenced the restaurant's décor and menu, mussels come with a baguette and fries in a white wine reduction sauce. Whole Foods is near the hospital in the neighborhood's southern end, and Pick 'n Save is across the river in Riverwest.

Traditional and Montessori instruction options
Children living in Murray Hill attend Milwaukee Public Schools, which offers school of choice so families can send their school-aged kids to any location with open seats. Maryland Avenue Montessori School teaches prekindergarten through eighth grade and is rated a B-minus. For a more traditional type of education, students attend Hartford Avenue Elementary School, which is on the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee campus and rated a C-minus. Riverside University High School is within walking distance of many homes in the neighborhood and is rated a C. Riverside offers more AP classes and honors programs than any other school in the district and recently underwent renovations to update the 100-year-old building.

No car necessary in Murray Hill
Living without a car is entirely possible in Murray Hill, with walkable streets and two bus lines running through the neighborhood along North Maryland Avenue and North Oakland Avenue. Downtown Milwaukee is a 20-minute bus ride away, and the nightlife around East Brady Street in Lower East Side is a 20-minute walk. Designated bike lanes are along the bordering roads of the neighborhood, and signs for drivers to share the road with cyclists are along others. The university is less than a mile north of the neighborhood, while Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Hospital is just past the southern end. Proximity to the hospital means the area has a bit of noise from sirens and emergency vehicles. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is just over 10 miles south.
