Root Creek
Milwaukee Public Schools within walking distance
Three Milwaukee Public Schools accommodate students of all ages in Root Creek, starting with Honey Creek Elementary, which scores a C on Niche. Mark Borkowski is a Milwaukee City Council Member who represents District 11, which includes Root Creek. “Honey Creek is just an excellent school,” Borkowski says. “Both my children went there, and the administration is so good that the only time a teacher actually leaves is when they retire. You’ve got teachers that’ll spend literally 15, 20 years of their career at Honey Creek because they don’t want to leave.” Kids in Grades 6 through 8 head to Wedgewood Park International School, the first Wisconsin school to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme. In the classroom, tweens and teens can dig deep into a swath of academic areas from math and science to performing arts and design, while extracurricular activities include everything between poetry club, robotics, jazz band and a bowling league. Wedgewood picks up a C-minus rating from Niche. Students finish their education at Hamilton High School, which offers nearly a dozen Advanced Placement (AP) courses, specialized career training in biomedical and computer sciences, and a robust athletic program. Hamilton High earns a C from Niche.School parks also serve the community
Root Creek’s public schools feature several athletic facilities that serve as public parks past school hours. Tennis and basketball courts sit behind Wedgewood Park International School, while the high school’s Hamilton Bell Park features baseball and softball diamonds and a running track circling the football and soccer field. There's also Wedgewood Park, which has a playground and a wading pool. For a different, indoor-friendly kind of competition, residents can easily walk to Lucky Bob’s Slot Cars, an indoor raceway with a variety of miniature racetracks. This hobbyist’s haven features weekly circuit and drag racing competitions and regularly hosts the annual Midwest Championship Race. For those looking for a less competitive experience, Root Creek Waterway is a popular picnic destination. The creek cuts through the southwest corner of the neighborhood and aligns with the backyards of many properties.Ranch-style homes and duplexes
Ranch-style homes are the most common house style, but Cape Cods and split-levels can also be found in the neighborhood. Sidewalks line either side of the street and feature a grass divider that protects them from the road. However, aging infrastructure has lead to long cracks and potholes on many roadways. Single-family homes mostly stay below $300,000; homes with driveways and larger floor plans tend to carry higher price tags. Overall, homes tend to range in price from $150,000 to $350,000, with a median price of roughly $275,000. Duplexes and condos built between the 1960s and 1980s are also common and can cost between $100,000 to $200,000.MCTS bus stops are nearby
Root Creek is lauded for its walkability to nearby schools, but the neighborhood also has ample public transportation. Most homes are within a half mile of a Milwaukee County Transit System bus stop, including stops on Morgan Avenue, 60th Street, Howard Avenue and Forest Home Avenue. Major thoroughfares for the area include Forest Home Avenue, Interstate 94, I-43 and I-41. Medical care is less than 3 miles away at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. Downtown Milwaukee is about 10 miles away, while Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 7 miles southeast.Follow Forest Home Avenue for food and shopping
Residents can travel along Forest Home Avenue and discover several nightlife spots in and around the neighborhood. Mezcalero is a Mexican joint and banquet hall that regularly hosts swing dancing and karaoke nights. Friends on Forest Home has casual, downhome bar vibes and is a popular venue to watch hometown heroes like the Brewers and the Bucks play. Grocery stores like Metro Market, Walmart and Sendik's Food Market are about 2 miles away in Greenfield, which also has a mix of franchise and locally-owned restaurants. Southridge Mall, also in Greenfield, has retail shopping covered with stores like Macy's and T. J. Maxx.
