A walkable neighborhood on Milwaukee's southwest side

Root Creek, a quiet Milwaukee neighborhood of about 1,500 residents, offers a rare convenience: an elementary, middle, and high school all located within its boundaries. Families are drawn to its peaceful, walkable streets and the easy access to well-regarded public schools. Just a short drive from the shops, restaurants, and grocery stores of nearby Greenfield, Root Creek provides a comfortable home base on the southwest side of Milwaukee.

Wedgewood Park has the first IB program in Wisconsin

Milwaukee Public Schools offers citywide school choice through magnet programs, statewide open enrollment, and out-of-district transfers. Placement typically depends on space availability and lottery systems. Kids can start at Honey Creek Elementary, which receives a C from Niche. “Both my children went there, and the administration is so good that the only time a teacher actually leaves is when they retire,” says Mark Borkowski, a former Milwaukee City Alderman representing District 11. “You’ve got teachers that’ll spend literally 15, 20 years of their career at Honey Creek because they don’t want to leave.” Kids in sixth through eighth grade head to C-minus-rated Wedgewood Park International School, the first Wisconsin school to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB). Students finish their education at Hamilton High School, which also receives a C-minus. St. John the Evangelist School is a private option for kids in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade currently unrated by Niche.

School parks also serve the community

Root Creek’s public schools feature several athletic facilities that serve as public parks past school hours. Tennis and basketball courts sit behind Wedgewood Park International School, while the high school’s Hamilton Bell Park features baseball and softball diamonds and a running track circling the football and soccer field. There's also Wedgewood Park, which has a playground and a wading pool. Armour Park has 14 acres of open green space, a playground and a paved walking path that stretches from Howard Avenue to Waterford Avenue. Lucky Bob’s Slot Cars, an indoor raceway with a variety of miniature racetracks, is a hobbyist’s haven with weekly circuit and drag racing competitions.

Post-war Cape Cod, ranch-style homes and duplexes

The neighborhood’s housing stock reflects the post-war housing boom in southwest Milwaukee. Buyers can find midcentury Cape Cods, ranch-style homes, brick Colonial Revivals and Tudor-inspired designs on compact lots with driveways and attached garages. Sidewalks and mature trees line either side of the street, but aging infrastructure has led to long cracks and potholes on many roads. Homes spend an average of 15 days on the market, far less than the nation’s average of 52, signaling a competitive market. Homes typically cost between $200,000 and $350,000. There’s a strong rental market, too, with condos, duplexes and townhouses ranging from just over $100,000 to about $250,000. Investors can find multi-family properties starting at $450,000 for a side-by-side duplex up to $1 million for an eight-unit complex.
