A Milwaukee suburb with parks, community support and direct access to downtown
With Appleton Avenue running along the western flank of the neighborhood and Fond du Lac Freeway along the eastern side, Valhalla offers immediate access to direct routes that take commuters 9 miles to downtown Milwaukee. The neighborhood homes offer a suburban alternative for those looking for rental properties or a suburban alternative to city life. “The main reason people are moving there is because of the remodeled homes that are outside of the city,” says Realtor Richard Barnes, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Realty Experts. Further, nearby parks provide opportunities to get outdoors or get involved in rec sports, and community organizations work to improve education and provide access to programs for residents.
Mid-century ranch styles and duplexes
Home to nearly 4,400 residents, Vahalla has a mix of apartments, single-family and multi-family houses, with renters making up almost 70% of the community. Most of the housing is clustered on either side of Valhalla Memorial Park cemetery. Sidewalks and old-growth trees line residential streets, and most houses are 15 to 30 feet from the road with fenced backyards and detached garages. Ranch-style homes from the 1950s to the ‘70s with simple, linear floor plans are prominent, along with others with more modern, L-shaped layouts. These houses sell from $125,000 to $220,000. Bungalows from the 1950s and ‘60s and Bi-level duplexes from the 1950s fall within a similar price range. There is plenty of opportunity to build equity in Valhalla. Many buyers are looking at homes here as investments. “We buy them off-market, flip them and resell them,” Barnes says.

Gianelli’s Pizza & Chicken Man and El Greco
Dining options are within walking distance of most residents. Gianelli’s Pizza & Chicken Man is located in a strip mall along West Silver Spring Drive with two restaurants: a pizza portion founded in 1983 and a chicken portion founded in 1969. Along West Appleton Avenue, El Greco has a wood-furnished interior with spacious booths and serves a Mediterranean menu. A Family Dollar is on the neighborhood’s southwest corner. Hmong Town is an Asian market about a mile south of the neighborhood. On North 91st Street, SuperThrift sells books, clothing and household items. All proceeds fund addiction rehab programs through the Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge. The Applecrest Plaza shopping center, with a Dollar Tree, a Walmart and other big-name retailers, is just northwest of the neighborhood.

The Bryant Community Center and Greater New Birth Church
The neighborhood has a strong communal backbone. In the evenings, Bryant Elementary doubles as the Bryant Community Center, where kids and adults alike can participate in dance, fitness and art classes, thanks to Milwaukee Recreation. “We noticed this area did not previously have a lot of participation in our programs, so we wanted to change that,” says Milwaukee Recreation Marketing Supervisor Claire McHugh. “We are happy to offer this neighborhood low-cost recreation programming so that we are reaching folks across the city.” Churches also help cultivate a sense of community in Valhalla. On the neighborhood’s north end, Greater New Birth Church has served the neighborhood for over 40 years.
Vogel Park and Havenwoods State Forest
The 12-acre Vogel Park lies just south of Valhalla and has several baseball fields and a newly renovated playground that held its ribbon cutting in July of 2024. About 4 miles east of the neighborhood, Havenwoods State Forest is a 237-acre park where miles of trails pass through wetlands, fields, woods and educational gardens. The park also has a resource center, an auditorium and classrooms. Valhalla Memorial Park is in the center of the neighborhood. The cemetery has paved paths where residents can take evening walks. Thirteen granite steps lead up to the steel doors of Valhalla Mausoleum, a stone structure with a pitched roof supported by Greco-Roman columns. A fenced-in woodland borders the cemetery to the south, but trespassing on the site is banned. The woodland captures most of the neighborhood and cemetery’s drainage.
