Established Groveland brings safety and highly-ranked schools to Central Minnetonka

Located in the central region of Minnetonka, Groveland has spent years growing into a well-established neighborhood, something locals say isn’t going to change anytime soon. “The infrastructure has been well-developed and maintained over the decades,” says Cassie Frick, a Realtor with Edina Realty. “We’re basically as big as we’re going to get, so you don’t see a lot of huge changes. Especially out west where the suburbs are exploding.” Featuring highly ranked public schools, public parks and a sense of safety, families in particular seek out Groveland homes. The CAP Crime Index lists Groveland as a two out of 10 – one point away from being the lowest score possible.

Midcentury options make up the majority, with options for larger estates

Lazily winding roads are lined with mature oak and maple trees that shade driveways and two-car garages. Lots generally vary between a quarter and a full acre. Midcentury homes, including ranch-style and split-levels, fill most of the area. Depending on size and modern amenities, these homes range from the high $300,000s to the mid-$700,000s. Larger, neo-traditional estates are also available, running between $1 and 1.5 million.

Top-ranked public schools with a flair for sports and academics

Students can begin at Groveland Elementary School before heading to Minnetonka Middle School East. Both schools have an A grade from Niche. Hopkins Senior High School has an A-minus and an established reputation for academics and athletics.

Baseball diamonds, nature trails and a game of horseshoes

“You can’t throw a rock without hitting a public park,” says Frick. “Most of them are connected by the city’s paved trail system, and they cover a lot of activities.” Tennis and softball are popular at Gro Tonka Park, with kids playing on the horseshoe court or playground equipment. Hikers can admire the wetlands of Jidana Park from its boardwalk trail or canoe through Minnehanna Creek. Bennett Family Park has five diamonds for baseball or softball and hosts everything from Little League to traveling teams. About 2 miles northwest is Lake Minnetonka, the largest lake in the Twin Cities Area. Made up of an extensive collection of bodies of water, it’s one of the most popular destinations in Minnesota for fishing, boating and celebrations.

Old-fashioned malt shops and Asians flavors at casual eateries

Serving the area since 1983, Snuffy’s Malt Shop offers old-fashioned diner fare to match its retro atmosphere. Guests can order the onion rings, a patty melt, or a classic malt in one of 29 flavors. Mandarin Yang prides itself on scratch-made sauces and has a menu with Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai favorites. Locals head to Kowalski’s Market to pick up groceries grown and produced in the area, and Ridgedale Center is a mall with a wide selection of retail.

Farmers markets in the summer, dance parties in the winter

Held every Tuesday from June until September, the city’s Summer Farmers Market specializes in locally-grown produce and crafts. Summer Fest is a day of live entertainment and food, culminating in a fireworks display. The city holds Light Up the Commons in winter, encouraging residents to get through the winter with dancing and hot cocoa.

Easy access to Minneapolis and St. Paul for commuters

Interstate 494 is a major highway connecting Minneapolis, about 14 miles east, with St. Paul, another 11 miles past that. The Metro Transit Bus service crosses the region, with several stops on Oakland Road.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
