South 39th Street
Established homes on Missoula's hillside
South 39th Street is an established neighborhood offering home styles popular in the second half of the 20th century. “They’re going to be older homes probably built in the 1970s and 80s. I would say a mixture of split-entry homes and ranch-styles,” Richardson says. “They’re not on postage-size lots; you’ll have a decent backyard. There’s lots of trees, and you can get a good view of the city if you’re up higher.” South 39th Street is at the base of the South Hills area, giving the neighborhood a somewhat mountainous feel with views of Missoula from certain streets. Most homes in the neighborhood are on lots of at least 7,000 square feet, with many having up to a quarter-acre of space. While the lots are larger than in other Missoula neighborhoods, the community still has a suburban feel, making it easy for neighbors to get to know each other. Sidewalks connect the front lawns, offering walkability throughout the area. Houses in South 39th Street typically cost between $450,000 and $700,000.Shopping and dining in south Missoula
Nearby Brooks Street is home to several shopping and dining destinations. Southgate Mall is a large indoor shopping center with plenty of chain stores and restaurants, including Dillard’s, Scheels and H&M. The mall also has an AMC Dine-in theater where residents can catch the latest blockbusters. The South Crossing shopping center has stores like Kohl’s, Cabela’s and Petco just north of the neighborhood. This area is also home to Five on Black, a local Brazilian fast-food restaurant. This casual eatery serves bowls with churrasco chicken, Brazilian stew and chimichurri. The Notorious P.I.G. BBQ is a rustic smokehouse serving brisket, burnt ends and mac and cheese. Groceries are available at Yoke’s Fresh Market on Reserve, a regional chain selling local produce and meats. There is also a Walmart on Brooks Street for other household needs.Exploring the neighborhood on local trails
South 39th Street has plenty of parks in the neighborhood that offer recreational options. Honeysuckle Park is a small green space with a playground, a baseball field and a basketball court. Wapikiya Park is just a few blocks over and has a playground, a basketball court and an open field for playing. The park also has picnic tables where residents can enjoy spending time with friends or family. Walkers and runners will enjoy the sprawling trail system that meanders through the neighborhood. “The South Hills trail system is a really cool feature. It’s a system of walking trails that go up through the community. You see a lot of people walking their dogs,” Richardson says. The system consists of several trails in multiple directions, winding between residential streets and behind homes. Some trails connect multiple parks while others offer access to the local schools, allowing residents to create a route for a relaxing walk or a strenuous jog through the neighborhood.Highly rated schools in and around South 39th Street
