Divine restaurants, colorful murals and palm trees
In sunny California’s San Joaquin Valley, is Modesto, a former Pacific railroad town with prosperous agriculture and vineyards on the Tuolumne River. Roaming the historic brick paths downtown allows for views of art galleries, live symphonies or dramatic performances from local theater companies. Vibrant artwork and colorful murals cover the side streets and alleyways on 10th Street, like the DOMO Walls, a series of detailed portraits and designs on Bartoni Lane.
The city's claim to fame is "American Graffiti," a film directed by George Lucas, which showcases the regional affection for automobiles, art culture and rock music in Modesto. In fact, the legendary filmmaker and creator of “Star Wars” was born and raised in Modesto. "In front of one of the murals of Darth Vader, there's an ensemble playing John Williams symphonies to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 'Star Wars,'" says Todd Aaronson, CEO of Visit Modesto, the community's tourism organization.
