Green Hills

Custom homes on sprawling lawns
The name “Green Hills” perfectly encapsulates the streetscapes in this Nashville neighborhood. “The typical home tends to be large, and they’re on huge yards. New construction is at least 4,500 to 6,000 square feet,” says Monday. Prospective buyers will find Colonial and Tudor-inspired homes, new builds with geometric angles and turreted brick designs dating back to the 1980s. Single-family prices start around $1 million and can easily surpass $3 million for custom properties with walk-in closets the size of small bedrooms. Residents park in two-car (or sometimes three-car) garages and towering oak and pine trees dwarf even the tallest of estates. Along with single-family options, there are also townhouses and condos for less than $1 million; in some cases, a one-bedroom unit can sell for under $300,000.
Luxury retail options inside The Mall at Green Hills
Home to over 100 retailers, including Macy’s, Nordstrom (complete with Nordstrom Grill), and Gucci, The Mall at Green Hills is a major neighborhood draw, especially on rainy days when locals head to Regal to watch the latest releases. Grocery options like Kroger and Trader Joe’s are nearby, and Whole Foods is just across the Hillsboro Pike from the famous Bluebird Café. Monday recommends Char, which serves up 16 o.z. Ribeyes and lamb chops with cilantro mint relish. “I’ve loved this place for years, and I still love it, she says, also highlighting The Greenhouse Bar. “It’s exactly what it sounds like — it’s a bar in a greenhouse, and it’s so neat.” There’s also Fox’s Donut Den, which has been a Green Hills staple since the early 1970s. “They got the best apple fritters,” says Brown — she’s even been known to surprise her clients with them.
An Academy of Global Health and Sciences at Hillsboro High
Green Hill students can start their public school journeys at Julia Green Elementary, which earned a B-plus from the educational review site, Niche, before going on to J.T. Moore Middle and Hillsboro High, both of which earned B’s. At Hillsboro High, students choose between career and thematic academies during their Sophomore year. One such option is the Academy of Global Health and Sciences, which offers separate pathways in therapeutic services, interdisciplinary science and research, and sport and human performance. There are also nearby private institutions like Lipscomb Academy and Harpeth Hall School, both of which were awarded A-plus grades. At the neighborhood’s westernmost border is Lipscomb University, previously called the Nashville Bible School, which is home to approximately 3,000 undergraduates.
Farmers markets, wine tastings and yoga classes at the public library
Just outside of Green Hills to the north is Sevier Park, which is home to the 12 South Farmers Market on Tuesday nights from May through October. There’s live music, fresh tomatoes throughout the fall and plenty of pets; Nashville is definitely a dog city. “In the grocery stores, you’ll sometimes see dogs. Some places have even put up signs saying ‘You can’t bring your pet in here,’ although that’s not a lot,” says Brown. Sevier Park also acts as the grounds for the Touch of Brews Festival in late September, where residents can enjoy Terrapin Beer and Grateful Dead cover bands. To the west of the neighborhood, mansion tours start at $28 at Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery. Private wine tastings cost $80, and some locals join the wine club for discounts. There’s also the Green Hills Branch of the Nashville Public Library which has a busy calendar of yoga classes, storytimes and writing workshops.
A free festival in Green Hills Park and Civil War battle sites
Next to J.T. Moore Middle School is Green Hills Park, where there’s a small playground and batting cages for softball practice. The free Green Hills Park Festival has been going strong for nearly a decade, and locals can look forward to an evening of live music, face painting and food trucks representing local establishments like the Loveless Cafe, which happens to be a favorite of Dolly Parton. In the western half of the neighborhood, Woodmont Park provides a place for swinging and sliding after school, and locals can learn about Civil War History at Shy’s Hill to the south, and canons overlook big box retailers in the Green Hills Shopping Center below.
Public buses stop along the Hillsboro Pike
Nashville’s city center is about 8 miles north of Green Hills, accessible via Estes Road or Interstate 65. The 7-Hillsboro Bus, part of the WeGo Public Transit system, starts at the mall and heads up the Hillsboro Pike towards Central Station downtown. Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West, a 640-plus-bed facility that also serves as a significant employer in the area, is less than 3 miles from Green Hills, and — as Monday notes — the Nashville International Airport is just about 15 minutes east along Interstate 440. According to Brown, the city is looking to expand public transit options as the population continues to grow.
