Porter Heights
Brunch cocktails and record stores
When it comes to dining and shopping, Porter Heights offers more obscure, quirky scenes rather than well-known spots. “There aren’t many chain restaurants or stores around here, but anything you need is just a couple miles away,” O’Toole says. “Cafe Roze draws a big crowd, as it serves breakfast food and coffee in the morning and sandwiches and cocktails in the afternoon.” She also points out, “Vinyl Tap across the street sells craft brews and different vinyl records.” Nearby is Tabla Rasa Toys, a toy store with a soft-serve ice cream station inside. And in the same complex, Cecil’s Skate Shop sells all things skateboarding, with a skate park for testing new gear outside. For more retail and grocery options, locals head to Gallatin Pike for Kroger, Aldi or Publix.1900s bungalows next to modern revivals
In the residential areas of Porter Heights, a home maintaining its 1900s structure may neighbor a new construction. “It’s becoming a more family-oriented area, and there are a lot of new homes being built,” O’Toole says. Older ranch homes and two-story bungalows with dormer windows and 1,000 to 1,500 square feet of space, some with driveways or a basement, can be found for $400,000 to $600,000. Larger, 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot contemporary Craftsman homes, Colonial Revivals and Farmhouse Revivals with balconies and garages are in the $650,000 to $950,000 price range.Plenty of greenspace at Shelby Bottoms
Just west of Porter Heights is South Inglewood Park, which offers a playground and an open field. There is also the South Inglewood Community Center on the premises, complete with athletic courts, a fitness area and event space. The neighborhood is next door to Cornelia Fort Airpark at Shelby Park, where different walking trails connect to Shelby Bottoms, which has a nature center, a playground, a greenway and a dog park. Nearby, golfers enjoy the 9-hole fairway at Vinny Links Golf Course or the 18-hole fairway at Shelby Golf Course. “Locals love rollerblading or walking their dogs along Music City Bikeway, which connects to the Cumberland Pedestrian Bridge overlooking the river,” O’Toole says. “And Percy Priest Lake is only 15 miles away.” This lake area offers trails and swimming access, as well as boat and kayak access.STEM high school in Metro Nashville
Metro Nashville Public Schools receive a B-minus overall Niche grade and serve Porter Heights students. Elementary learners can benefit from a 14-1 student-teacher ratio at the C-Niche-graded Rosebank Elementary, which Niche ranked in the top 8% of Most Diverse Public Elementary Schools in Tennessee. Students can then progress to Isaac Litton Middle School, which receives a C Niche grade. Older teenagers can attend Stratford Comprehensive High School, a C-Niche-graded magnet school with a STEM program. The Airpark's Pickin Party
Nashville is home to country music, and that extends to Porter Heights. “Cornelia Fort Airpark hosts Pickin’ Party all summer long, with a stage for different musical performances,” O’Toole says. Named for pickin’ a banjo, this festival presents a variety of country and bluegrass musicians and bands. Visitors can also enjoy different drink and food vendors, as well as family-friendly activities.Getting around by bus or bicycle
There are several bus stops to the west of Porter Heights along Porter Road. “It’s only a 5-mile bike ride or drive into downtown Nashville, so it’s an easy commute,” O’Toole says. The downtown Riverfront train station is 5 miles away, and Nashville International Airport is a 10-mile drive down Interstate 40. Interstate access, contemporary storefronts, outdoor parks and music venues help the desirable suburb of Porter Heights attract creative shoppers and music lovers alike.
