Shady streets along the West Bank
When the sun breaks through the leafy mantle to dapple the streets of Old Aurora, this New Orleans neighborhood lives up to its celestial name. Located on the West Bank in the larger community of Algiers, the quiet enclave offers calm and convenience about 10 minutes from the humming downtown districts. “It has a beautiful oak tree canopy; it’s on high ground. It’s just a very pretty neighborhood,” says Jane Hicks, Realtor with Latter & Blum. “There are golf courses nearby; you can certainly go into the city if you choose. It’s a very desirable area.” Homes began to spring up in the area just after World War II, when it was known as Aurora Gardens. As the construction spread beyond the Woodland Highway to create New Aurora, the neighborhood west of the Intracoastal Waterway became Old Aurora.

Ranch houses and renovation
A network of tree-lined residential streets characterizes this part of the city. While many ranch houses and bungalows from the 1950s and ’60s remain, there are also plenty of new builds. “Some of the houses are older, so if they haven’t been updated, they’re being torn down and replaced by new construction,” Hicks says. Lot sizes are more generous than in some surrounding neighborhoods, measuring about a quarter-acre on average. Older neglected structures start at under $100,000, with renovated 4-bedroom homes selling for up to $400,000. Although most of the streets and paved sidewalks are in good condition, some are a little rough, especially if there’s ongoing construction in the area.

Baseball at Brechtel Park
Locals have to head a block or two south of Old Aurora to access Brechtel Park, a popular picnic spot with scenic walking trails winding around a central lagoon. There’s also a baseball field onsite for visitors who want to organize a weekend game. For younger kids, Norman Playground is close to the elementary school and has a nifty play structure for swinging or climbing.

Riding the RTA to downtown New Orleans
It takes about 10 minutes to drive to downtown New Orleans from most homes in Old Aurora. For residents who prefer not to drive, the New Orleans Rapid Transit Authority (RTA) stops in many places along Holiday Drive, MacArthur Boulevard and General Meyer Avenue. The Lower Algiers Ferry departs regularly from Winston Street, transporting passengers across the Mississippi River to Chalmette.
Algiers Plaza in Old Aurora
With the French Quarter so tantalizingly close by, Old Aurora residents have no shortage of fabulous dining opportunities. However, within the neighborhood, options are limited beyond a string of fast-food joints along General De Gaulle Drive. Algiers Plaza shopping mall is also along this corridor and features a Winn-Dixie supermarket, Petco and TJ Maxx.
Fire station on Woodland Drive
New Orleans Fire Department Engine House #17 operates from Woodland Drive near the University of Holy Cross. Potential homebuyers interested in the neighborhood should consider that, especially if they’re looking at houses on nearby streets.
