St. Bernard Area is a rising New Orleans hot spot

Bounded by major roadways and just minutes from Downtown New Orleans, the St. Bernard Area provides residents with easy access to the rest of the city, as well as City Park. The area was once dominated by the St. Bernard Public Housing Development, one of four high-density urban public housing developments in the region. Built in the 1940s, the complex came about after President Roosevelt signed the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, which provided public housing for low-income families. People began moving into St. Bernard in the early 1940s, and many families stayed until Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in 2005. In 2007, the projects were taken down, and today, the area is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after in the city. “The people have lived there generationally, so it’s a very close community," says Realtor Brittany Picolo-Ramos, leader of the Picolo Ramos Team of Keller Williams Realty New Orleans.

Mix of vintage and new homes with quick sales and tidy yards

Homes in the St. Bernard Area run the gamut from older shotgun houses to contemporary new builds. While exploring the neighborhood, you’ll see duplexes, raised cottages, bungalows, and traditional-style homes. There are also transitional traditional houses, contemporary cottages, and HardiPlank homes, built with termite resistant siding. Most homes are brick or wooden and have small, neat, fenced lawns. Off-street parking is the norm, and homes in good condition tend to sell within 60 days. A typical dwelling here has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and prices range from $275,000 to $450,000.

Public charter schools in and around Saint Bernard

Through the New Orleans Public School system, kids may attend KIPP Believe or Langston Hughes Academy Charter School for pre-kindergarden through eighth grade. The neighborhood is also home to McDonogh 35 Senior High School. Each school gets a C-minus from Niche.

City Park, rec center and skatepark offer acres of outdoor space

One of the largest urban parks in the nation, City Park was founded in 1854 and covers over 1,300 acres. The park is home to the largest collection of mature live oaks in the world, with some trees being more than 800 years old. It's overseen by the City Park Conservancy, which works to maintain the value and health of the park's natural green space and wildlife habitats. There’s something for everyone here: the Louisiana Children’s Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art, walking trails, picnic areas, a dog park and more.
The St. Bernard Recreation Center features outdoor basketball courts and a pool for all ages as well as play equipment for smaller children. More than that, the center provides a chance for neighbors to congregate, play, and socialize.

Another recreational option is the Parasite DIY Skatepark. Founded in 2008, the park arose to fill a need for the Big Easy. At the time, New Orleans was the largest city in the nation without a skatepark. So, enthusiasts took matters into their own hands and built a park near abandoned railroad tracks. This was bulldozed shortly after, but the group was undeterred. They began rebuilding near the original site, and Parasite was born. City government permits came a year later, and finally, the skaters of NOLA had a place to skate, play music and make art. Today, the park is a vibrant space with a large ramp, peanut pool, trees and rain gardens.

Anthony Bean Theater brings arts education to all ages

For more than two decades, Anthony Bean Community Theater has been a culturally diverse performing arts venue providing opportunities to learn stage and screen acting, set design and theater management. The theater produces classics, popular plays, comedies and musicals, as well as original works. In addition to children and adult acting lessons, there’s a youth theater, after school program, summer camp and choir.

Highway and public transit connections throughout the city

The Saint Bernard Area is about 5 miles north of downtown New Orleans, with nearby highway access. Interstates 610 and 10 connect to the city center. New Orleans Regional Transit Authority buses also serve the area.

Spider Meat Market and Winn-Dixie serve everyday food needs

Spider Meat Market has a fresh deli meast, a select few grocery items and hot food. The menu features po'boys, burgers and wings. Winn-Dixie has a full grocery selection a few miles south. Businesses on U.S. Route 90 include beauty services, pharmacies, autocare centers and restaurants.
