Older homes close to all the amenities
Welcome to St Roch, a historic neighborhood found lakeside of St Claude Avenue across from the hip Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. It began in 1830 when the Pontchartrain Railroad connected the Marigny neighborhood with Milneburg, a small settlement on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Today, the neighborhood is home to people looking to live close to the most exciting areas in New Orleans without all of the hustle and bustle. There aren’t many restaurants and shops within its boundaries, but the neighborhood enjoys easy access to surrounding amenities. “There’s a lot of history here,” says David Hedges, owner of St Roch-based Nola Tour Guy. “And its name is a cool story. It’s named after the patron saint of dogs, bachelors and invalids.”
Saint Roch is located just minutes away from downtown New Orleans.

Plain old or newly updated, plenty to choose
St Roch is primarily a residential neighborhood, with homes both old and new, but many longtime residents are now being priced out due to high demand. “More than half the families make less than $30,000 here,” says David Hedges. “So you can imagine what home prices have done.” Primarily single and double shotgun-style houses, with a mix of raised cottages, the homes come in a wide variety of colors, and almost all are found on long, narrow lots. Prices can dip as low as $110,000 for homes needing serious work and reach as high as $400,000 for a fully-renovated four-bedroom cottage, but the median price is around $200,000.

Gotta get out to see the sights
Located on St Claude Avenue between the French Quarter and the Bywater, the neighborhood is within walking distance to plenty of shops and restaurants, though there isn’t much within its boundaries. An oddity in its surroundings, the St Roch Market is a destination for many of the area’s visitors, though there’s likely to be few residents. “It used to be a great seafood market,” says Hedges. “But now it’s expensive for a lot of the people who live here.” The local bar, St Roch Tavern, remains a local favorite, offering pinball, live music and even haircuts every Tuesday night. Within walking distance of St Roch Tavern, there's also live music venues Hi-Ho, Always and Siberia, as well as Kajun's Karaoke Bar for those who like to sing.

Major festivals nearby
While the neighborhood doesn’t host many events at home, it sits within walking distance to the city's busier areas, putting it close to all the action of festivals like Mardi Gras. “It’s close to Bywater and the St Claude corridor, where there’s a lot of bars and live music venues,” says Hedges. “The city is very walkable. It takes fifteen minutes to get anywhere.”
Mary Bethune and G.W. Carver
St. Roch students can attend pre-kindergarten through 8th grade at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, which earns a C-plus on Niche and offers music classes, Spanish classes and sports programs like football and basketball. For high school, students can attend G.W. Carver High School, which earns a B-minus.
Small parks and a cemetery
“There’s more green space here than some other areas,” says Hedges. “And a couple of places for kids.” St Roch Park and McCue Playground offer children of all ages the opportunity to play and exercise. St Roch Park is found in the middle of the neighborhood, while McCue Playground lies near the area’s top border. Besides playgrounds, both parks offer basketball courts and baseball fields. For a more haunting park atmosphere, the St Roch Cemeteries offer gothic monuments and mausoleums as part of the St Roch Chapel, formally dedicated in 1876.

Plenty of parking and public transit
Thanks to its wide, gridded streets and many bus stops, getting around St Roch is easy. Parking isn’t a problem either, since many homes have driveways and street parking is plentiful. In addition to Interstate 10, which runs through the middle of the area, major streets like Franklin Avenue, Florida Avenue, and St. Claude Avenue make commuting easy.
Public electric commuter bikes are available throughout Saint Roch.
The I10 interstate conveniently runs through the Saint Roch region towards downtown New Orleans.
