Downtown Newark
Suburban Neighborhood in Newark, Delaware
New Castle County 19711, 19716
Apartments, student housing and small suburbs
Most of the housing in Downtown Newark is comprised of apartment complexes and student dorms. However, there are also subdivisions in and around the university. "Newark is pretty big," says Debbie Christie, a Newark resident and Realtor with Northrop Realty. ""In the heart of the city, within 2 to 3 miles of the University, there is quite a bit of student housing and rentals, along with several neighborhood communities and local K-12 schools that form the bedrock of the town. You'll also find graduate housing and additional subdivisions and neighborhoods near the stadium and on the outskirts of UDEL." Brick Cape Cods, ranches and houses with colonial influences sit along streets with sidewalks. Many homes have grassy lawns and clusters of trees that shade homes and roadways. Houses range in price from $325,000 to $575,000, depending on upkeep and proximity to the university.Downtown Newark has several parks
College students and residents can venture to any of the seven parks. Mason-Dixon Trail is a popular pedestrian-friendly route in the community's northern section. James F. Hall Trail connects to neighborhood green spaces like Lewis Park and Kells Park. Phillips Park has an onsite skate park and tennis courts. Olan Thomas Park is home to a botanical garden and is within walking distance of Kershaw and Curtis Mill Parks. The University of Delaware is an integral part of the City’s history
The University of Delaware offers academic programs in various fields, from the sciences to the arts. Among the school's most notable alums are three founding fathers, Nobel Prize laureates and a Tony Award-winning choreographer. Downtown Newark's families are zoned for the Christina School district. Students can attend Westpark Place Elementary in the neighborhood's southwest corner. The school earns a B-plus from Niche. Shue-Medill Middle sits outside the neighborhood with a Niche grade of C. Newark High School earns a B-minus and is one of the oldest schools in Delaware. Niche ranks the school as one of the state's top schools for arts.University of Delaware events, concerts and local venues
The Bob Carpenter Center is a hub for the University of Delaware's basketball and volleyball games. Next door is Delaware Stadium, home of the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens. "The Newark concert series, off Main Street and at White Clay Creek State Park, are big community draws," Christie says. The city hosts the Spring Concert Series on the lawn at the university's Academy Building. Christie says the Summer Concert Series at the park can attract over 300 locals each Wednesday. Downtown Newark's venues are known to host small-time affairs, such as Comedy Night at Midnight Oil Brewing Company.Traveling by DART bus or from Newark Station
The area is walkable and bikeable to many hotspots, including the university and shops on Main Street. The city provides fixed routes and on-demand bus services for commutes around the city. Bus stops line down Main Street, College Avenue and Elkton Road. To the south, the Newark Station connects to Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. Most restaurants are on Main Street
Downtown Newark's stores and restaurants are mostly found on East Market Street. El Diablo Burritos attracts many students for its quickly made dishes. The Peach Blossom Eatery is more popular with residents and has colorful flower art covering the walls. "Timothy's is a local favorite, and I would also recommend Taverna on Main Street," Christie says. Timothy's of Newark is a sports bar, while Taverna's menu features pasta and pizza. The community-owned organic grocer, Newark Natural Foods, stands on Main Street. The Grove at Newark retail center has an ACME Markets grocery store. Shoppers can thrift at the Newark Shopping Center or watch a movie at Main Street Movies 5.White Clay Creek can be a flood risk
