Residential living on the Salton Sea in North Shore
Located along the north shore of the Salton Sea, North Shore is a small community of about 3,500 people in Riverside County. The once-popular tourist destination is also home to the Salton Sea State Recreation Area. Today, North Shore is in the process of rebuilding itself, with projects centered around restoring the lake, its surrounding habitat and air quality. “If they ever clean the Salton Sea, it will be a happening spot for sure,” says Paula Turner, a Realtor at Desert Pacific Properties with 17 years of experience. “North Shore was developed back in the 1960s when it was booming. Lots of infrastructure like roads and utilities were built then. That’s why the lots today are very affordable. It’s because they already did the groundwork years ago.”
Single-story homes and open lots in North Shore
Overlooking the vast desert plains, residential properties in North Shore are scattered into small clusters of communities that sit on quiet, rural roads. Homes here are mostly single-story ranch-style houses from the latter half of the 20th century. Typically priced between $200,000 and $350,000, most houses are under 2,000 square feet and have two to three bedrooms. Yards are sometimes fenced in with wires or gates. Some lawns are professionally landscaped with small gardens and desert plants, while others are still barren or unmaintained. “Again, if they turn the sea into a recreational lake, prices will definitely go up,” Turner says. “Lots are probably in the $15,000 to $50,000 range, and they are considered of really good value because most of the infrastructure is already in place.”

Recreational opportunities and environmental concerns by the Salton Sea
Stretching across 4 miles of the lake’s shoreline, Salton Sea State Recreation Area offers camping, boating and picnicking opportunities. Designed by Albert Frey, the North Shore Beach and Yacht Club was recently restored as a local community center and a museum. In the 1980s, the Salton Sea was contaminated with farm and industrial runoff, which eventually led to the spread of wildlife diseases, toxic dust and air pollution. The state has approved $500 million toward rehabilitation efforts to mitigate these issues and revive wildlife habitats; these projects were started in the early 2020s and are expected to take years to complete. North Shore Community Park features a skate park, a soccer field and a playground.
