Oak Grove is known for its large lots and natural beauty

Surrounded by ponds, rivers and woods, homeowners choose Oak Grove for its scenic surroundings. Located in the center of Anoka County's farmlands and wildlife preserves, this small city has a reputation for quiet, natural beauty and vast tracts of land. In fact, larger home acreage isn't just the norm; it's a requirement. "They're unique in that they don't allow any lots under 2.5 acres," says Michelle Anderson, a Realtor with Re/Max Results. Active school and church communities are also attractive for many families moving to the area.

Midcentury and neo-traditional homes include multiple acres of land

Thanks to minimum acreage restrictions, houses have a level of landscaping and privacy that is uncommon in other regions in Minnesota. But the lots themselves aren't the only details that are bigger. "Oak Grove tends to have much larger homes," says Anderson, who's worked in the region since 2015. Properties are filled with trees, foliage and even the occasional stream or pond. Many homes have oversized garages, outbuildings and waterfront views. Ranch-style and split-level homes range from the mid-$200,000s to the low-$600,000s, depending on size and location. Neo-traditional homes with farmhouse accents start in the mid-$600,000s and peak in the high-$800,000s. Country estates with ample acreage are priced from high-$900,000s to $1.5 million.

Rum River Central Regional Park has tent camping, horseback riding and winter skiing. Refuge Golf Club has 18 public holes on 350 acres of woodlands. Golfers can take breaks at the clubhouse or order a drink at the bar. Local pizza and tavern fare at Chanticleer and Chester's

Chester's Small Town Tavern and Eatery puts an upscale spin on traditional tavern food with menu items like bacon bourbon Brussels sprouts and feta or their birria tacos. Chanticleer is a local chain known for its pizza of the month and specialty crust options. For shopping, locals frequently visit Riverdale Crossing, 10 miles south in Coon Rapids.
