About Oak Grove, MN

About Oak Grove, MN

Oak Grove is known for its large lots and natural beauty

Surrounded by ponds, rivers and woods, homeowners choose Oak Grove for its scenic surroundings. Located in the center of Anoka County's farmlands and wildlife preserves, this small city has a reputation for quiet, natural beauty and vast tracts of land. In fact, larger home acreage isn't just the norm; it's a requirement. "They're unique in that they don't allow any lots under 2.5 acres," says Michelle Anderson, a Realtor with Re/Max Results. Active school and church communities are also attractive for many families moving to the area.

Midcentury and neo-traditional homes include multiple acres of land

Thanks to minimum acreage restrictions, houses have a level of landscaping and privacy that is uncommon in other regions in Minnesota. But the lots themselves aren't the only details that are bigger. "Oak Grove tends to have much larger homes," says Anderson, who's worked in the region since 2015. Properties are filled with trees, foliage and even the occasional stream or pond. Many homes have oversized garages, outbuildings and waterfront views. Ranch-style and split-level homes range from the mid-$200,000s to the low-$600,000s, depending on size and location. Neo-traditional homes with farmhouse accents start in the mid-$600,000s and peak in the high-$800,000s. Country estates with ample acreage are priced from high-$900,000s to $1.5 million.

Parks and Refuge Golf Club are a way to enjoy the outdoors

Visitors fish, swim or canoe in the gentle waters at Lake George Regional Park, located north of the body of water that shares its name. Nature lovers can walk miles of forested trails, looking for the occasional glimpse of a Bald Eagle or Sandhill Crane. Rum River Central Regional Park has tent camping, horseback riding and winter skiing. Refuge Golf Club has 18 public holes on 350 acres of woodlands. Golfers can take breaks at the clubhouse or order a drink at the bar. Hunters enjoy the dense oak savanna of Robert and Marilyn Burman Wildlife Management Area for stalking deer, turkey and other game.

Sports at St. Francis High School bring the community together

Oak Grove students can begin at St. Francis Elementary School, which has a B from Niche, before attending St. Francis Middle School, which has a C-plus. Older students will attend St. Francis High School, which has a B-minus. School spirit is active in the community, with locals regularly showing up for high school sporting events. "They have a terrific setup over there, and everyone goes to the games," says Brian Mundle, a Realtor with Edina Realty. "Baseball, football – it's all really entertaining."

St. Patrick Catholic Church is actively involved in local events

St. Patrick Catholic Church hosts CountryFest, an annual weekend celebration that includes a youth block party, auctions, food and fireworks. "The church is really involved in the community," says Anderson.

Local pizza and tavern fare at Chanticleer and Chester's

Chester's Small Town Tavern and Eatery puts an upscale spin on traditional tavern food with menu items like bacon bourbon Brussels sprouts and feta or their birria tacos. Chanticleer is a local chain known for its pizza of the month and specialty crust options. For shopping, locals frequently visit Riverdale Crossing, 10 miles south in Coon Rapids. Options in this area include big-box stores like Hobby Lobby and grocery stores like Aldi and Cub. "For shopping, some people will go as far as Forest Lake," says Mundle. Forest Lake is over 20 miles east, and its retail choices include Target, Michaels and Walmart Supercenter.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are less than an hour south

State Highway 65 is the nearest thoroughfare, providing access to Minneapolis, about 35 miles south. St. Paul is about 40 miles southeast. A lack of public transit and walkability means residents need a car for most trips.
