Suburban Minnesota town with a major employer

Having a Minnesota Correctional Facility within the borders of Oak Park Heights means that residents can hold some of the 330 jobs at the facility. It also means local businesses and restaurants benefit from prison employees who spend their money in the community and with revenue through state funding. The prison’s presence can also raise concerns about safety and property values. However, the low housing inventory in the town proves that residents are more concerned with the community amenities available here. “Oak Park Heights is a wonderful small town close to all the activities and amenities of the St. Croix Valley,” says Wendy Gimpel, Realtor and CEO of Wendy Gimpel Real Estate. Hugging the edge of the St. Croix River that borders Wisconsin on its east side, the neighborhood has seven parks maintained by the city, plus a thriving business district. A standout high school, easy access to the outdoors and an active real estate market are just a few things this area has to offer.

“It’s relatively affordable,” Jason Teply of Coldwell Banker says of Oak Park Heights. “You don’t have the expense of downtown Stillwater, even though it’s right next door.” With the median list price of about $350,000, the market is considered very competitive, with many homes getting multiple offers, some with waived contingencies. Most single-family homes are in the $250,000 to $ 400,000 price range, with newer builds starting around $500,000. Properties stay on the market for an average of 47 days. “You have a lot of ranches and split entries," says Teply.

Paint, bingo, puppets and more

Every Tuesday during the summer, Oak Park Heights holds the Annual Summer Park Program at Autumn Hills Park, which is widely attended and features dozens of separate kid-friendly events. The summer kicks off with events like a mug painting event where kids were gifted a piggy bank and learned about the importance of saving money. Fairies in the Park, a summertime crowd favorite, see residents dressed in sparkly dresses and fairy wings, creating fairy doors and spaces to place along the trail to attract fairies. Attendees also can make their own musical instruments before playing bingo, listening to story time or watching a puppet show.
