Oakhurst has a close community full of outdoor adventure
A weathered wooden sign near the edge of the Sierra Nevada marks the entrance of Oakhurst, a former Wild West mining and lumber town. Now, it serves as a gateway to Yosemite National Park and the next-door neighbor of Bass Lake. Despite the tourism that comes through California State Route 41, or Highway 41, the area maintains a strong sense of community. “The people are really what make it special,” says Donna Pride, a resident of over 45 years and Realtor at London Properties. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here a month or all your life; people are happy and friendly, and they will help you whether they know you or not.” Additionally, the CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Surrounded by trails, parks and iconic natural landmarks
Oakhurst’s natural landscape and Madera County’s sunny weather allow residents to be active outside for most of the year. The area surrounds the Sierra Nevada campsites and trails for hiking and horseback riding. Yosemite National Park draws in over four million visitors annually for its iconic granite cliffs, waterfalls and world-class climbing opportunities. The fully recreational Bass Lake is another major draw, with waterfront restaurants, boat rentals and campgrounds. Residents also get active locally. “It’s the type of place where you’ll hear, ‘Let’s get together and barbecue,’ or ‘Come over and we’ll play pickleball,’” Pride says. “It’s very family-oriented in that way.” Oakhurst Community Park is a central gathering spot in town with a playground and open fields for events. The Sierra Nevada Little League Field hosts games next to the Oakhurst Community Center, which offers classes and group activities.

Housing spans from starter homes to large, hillside estates
The housing market consists of condos, manufactured homes and single-family properties. “You can choose a subdivision, where you see your neighbors, or you can be on an acre of land where you don’t see anyone,” Pride says. The median price is $450,000, just slightly higher than the national figure. “We’re so reasonably priced, though it’s important to note that fire insurance is high,” Pride says. Common architectural styles include Cape Cods, contemporary and ranch-style houses. Spanish Mission influences, such as tile roofs and stucco facades, are common for combatting high temperatures.

Three public schools within 1 mile of each other
Education is a big draw for potential buyers. “People that commute to Fresno will move here so their kids are in this school system because it’s very parent-teacher oriented,” Pride says. Students may attend Oakhurst Elementary, which scores a B-minus on Niche, and Oak Creek Intermediate School earns a C-plus. According to Niche, Yosemite High has a B and ranks among the top five high schools in Madera County. High schoolers can join various athletic teams, from tennis and football to water polo and beach volleyball.
