Wooded slopes and winding roads in Glen Highlands
Perched in the Oakland Hills, Glen Highlands offers elevated East Bay living. Winding roads twist through wooded slopes dotted with high-end homes, many of which have sweeping views of the cityscape below. It’s just minutes from popular outdoor destinations like Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, and less than 10 minutes from trendy cultural districts like Temescal and Rockridge. Midcentury and custom designs with big views
Glen Highlands is part of Oakland’s desirable hillside market. Homes are primarily single-family houses with midcentury, contemporary and custom architecture tucked away on forested hillsides. “This area was impacted by the Oakland Fire in the early 1990s, so you have a lot of new construction alongside the vintage homes that survived the fire,” says Realtor Anna Bahnson of Compass Real Estate, who has been working in Oakland real estate since 2012. Wildlife sightings such as deer and birds are common. Inventory is limited, and buying a home here can be competitive. The elevation means many back patios and windows open up to gorgeous views of the city, the hills and the San Francisco Bay. Prices range from the low $900,000s to $2.7 million.

The closest is Temescal Regional Recreation Area, a 48-acre park that surrounds Lake Temescal. It’s a popular spot for swimming, fishing, hiking and enjoying the summer sunshine. As you head further into the hills, you’ll reach Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve and Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve, both of which offer vast trail networks and rugged hikes surrounded by coast redwoods. Also nearby is the Claremont Country Club, a historic East Bay club with golf, tennis and pickleball.

Most errands require driving to nearby markets and districts
Glen Highlands is primarily residential, but it’s a short drive to popular commercial districts like Montclair Village, Temescal and Rockridge for groceries, cafés and dining. There are few walkable retail options within the neighborhood due to the hilly terrain, so most errands require a car. For groceries, you can head to local grocers like Trader Joe’s, Safeway or Whole Foods, all of which are within about 3 miles. The Temescal and Rockridge districts offer a mix of casual eats, cozy coffee shops and high-end eateries, including several Michelin restaurants. Local favorites include Snail Bar for wine and oysters, and Marufuku Ramen for Hakata-style ramen.
Glen Highlands diners can enjoy lunch at the nearby Daughter Thai Kitchen.
Glen Highlands residents also do their grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s in North Oakland.
