Lakeshore
Remodeled with reverence
The neighborhood’s curvilinear streets slope and wind along the natural contours of the hills. A shopping district filled with cafés, shops, and office buildings is just a short distance from the community’s homes, lined along Lakeshore Avenue and Grand Avenue. Sante Sandhu, Oakland native and Realtor with Luxe Living Real Estate Group, has seen many of the historic Italianate, Spanish, Tudor and Colonial-style homes retain their nostalgic traditional appearance, even after remodels that restored and modernized the homes. “The homeowners really keep the tradition going,” he says. “Keeping the historical characteristics of the homes is very important to them.” Given the remodels and renovations, homes in the area usually sell for anywhere between $1 million and $3 million. In Crocker, we trust
Families hold Crocker Highlands Elementary School nearby in high regard, as the school fosters community pride and cohesion. Annual events like the Crocker Carnival and the Walk-a-Thon fundraiser for the school’s PTA programs support the library, computer labs and art classrooms. West Lake Middle School can be the next step before enrolling at the well-known Oakland Technical High School, ranked one of the top schools in the area by U.S. News & World Report. Niche scores Oakland Tech an A, while Crocker and West Lake have a B-plus and C-minus, respectively.Fresh air and family fun
Locations for outdoor activities are all around Lakeshore. Oak Grove Park, a linear tree-covered zone with a trail running through it, sits in the middle of the community. On the other side of Interstate 580, Lakeshore residents visit the parks and gardens around Lake Merritt to enjoy nature at this oasis in the middle of the city. “I’ll see families hiking, jogging and walking together, especially on Saturday mornings,” says Sandhu. “It’s very family-oriented. When I’ve done open houses here on the weekends, I would see families walking up with parents pushing a stroller and a coffee in their hand.”A grand time at the theater
A prominent landmark first opened in the 1920s, the Grand Lake Theater anchors the shopping district and screens first-run movies. Capped with a giant illuminated rooftop sign of its name visible from the freeway, the Art Deco building’s lobby is decorated with neoclassical columns with fresco paintings on the walls. It’s all a throwback to older times and one that residents love, as the community has voted it the city’s best theater for several years.Dinner and a show
Since dinner and a movie are on the menu, Café Romonat can be the stop before Grand Lake Theater. Serving Ethiopian cuisine in a small storefront, the café is a popular place and is often filled with people sharing platters of spongy, fermented injera flatbread used to scoop bites of smoky lentils spiced with turmeric and ginger. If it’s date night, visiting the Cat House after the flick will do the trick, with refreshments in the dimly lit bar’s vintage-style lounge. Trader Joe’s and Walgreens provide residents with a place to purchase groceries and everyday essentials.Interconnected interstates
Interstate 580 borders the southwestern tip of Lakeshore, just across from Eastshore Park by Lake Merritt. The proximity to I-580 provides residents access to Interstate 980 and the rest of the Oakland area. On the Lake Merritt side of I-580, residents can access the Lake Merritt BART Station to use public transportation around the city.
