Lincoln Highlands
Mid-century, Tudor and contemporary homes
Lincoln Highlands’ hilly and winding streetscapes showcase an eclectic display of housing, from Midcentury modern designs to colorful Tudor cottages and modern minimalist styles. Garages are commonly tucked below the main living area, making good use of this hilly landscape. "Many of the homes are from the 1940s and 1950s. There's not a ton of turnover, and people generally stick around once they move in," Joyner says. The neighborhood’s wide streets feature narrowly paved sidewalks and are lined with trees. California bay laurels and oaks mingle with various fruit trees known to bloom in the area’s sunny Mediterranean climate. While some homes sit on higher hill slopes than others, most homes have some form of backdrop views of the surrounding hillsides. Home prices range from $800,000 to $1.4 million, although a few new modern construction estates can go as high as $2.5 million. When homes here are further into the desert, there is an ever-present threat: "The closer you get to Highway 13, the closer you are to the earthquake fault zone," Joyner says.Public schools with special pathway programs
Students may attend Sequoia Elementary School, which gets a B-plus rating from Niche, followed by the C-rated Bret Harte Middle School. The B-plus-rated Skyline High School offers students special pathway programs in computer science and technology, visual and performing arts and education and community health.Community parks and expansive nature trails
Less than a mile south of Lincoln Highlands are small community parks like Peralta Creek Park, which offers scenic creekside surroundings, while Avenue Terrace Park features a contemporary playground. More expansive recreation is located a mile north across Route 13 at the 500-acre Joaquin Miller Park. The site has woodland trails surrounded by redwood groves and oak trees, a playground and a dog park. The park’s trails lead east into Roberts Recreational Area, which has a community pool and picnic areas, before leading into the more expansive Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. This vast national park sprawls over a nearly 2,000-acre space with some of the world's oldest remaining coast redwood trees.Local dining and shopping at the Dimond shopping district
The popular Dimond shopping district is directly south and within walking distance of most Lincoln Highland residences. This sprawling space features a Farmer Joe’s Marketplace for groceries and the Michelin-rated Mexican restaurant, Bombera. Next door is Mohka House, a Yemeni coffee shop, and Grand Lake Kitchen, a trendy American eatery known for its extensive brunch offerings. Downtown Oakland is about 5 miles away for an array of boutiques, retail stores and more local dining with notable cuisines just as diverse as the overall city.Major highways and multiple bus lines
Route 13 borders Lincoln Highlands for access around the city, while Interstate 580 is less than a mile west. This main highway connects with Interstate 80, which leads over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and into San Francisco, 15 miles west. Multiple bus stops are located throughout the neighborhood, particularly along Lincoln Avenue, while the Fruitvale BART Station is about 3 miles south for light rail travel. The neighborhood is also 4 miles from the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center and 8 miles from the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport for domestic and international flights.Annual community festivals at neighborhood landmarks
The Oakland California Temple and historic Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral are prominent establishments in Lincoln Heights and are the site of many annual community events. The Oakland Greek Festival in May is a three-day celebration organized by the Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral. "Driving by, you'll hear great music. Many residents will walk to the festival because the church is so close and parking can be tight — it's a really big event for the community," Joyner says. Next door, the Oakland California Temple turns to winter with a huge holiday light show, and Joyner says their spring tulip planting is a sight to behold.
