Winding roads in Montclair
Set into steep hills that lead into dense forests, Montclair is home to some of Oakland’s premium real estate and views. “Montclair started as a resort town for people from San Francisco, says Andrea Gordon, a Realtor with Compass. “It’s a real hill-dweller area.” Tree-shaded roads wind through Montclair’s hillside, often brushing against wilderness areas and parks. Montclair Village, a small shopping center, is at the foot of the hills and is home to shops, restaurants and essential businesses. This hilly neighborhood tucks residents into far-away-feeling homes less than five miles from downtown Oakland and about 15 miles from San Francisco, where Gordon says residents often work.

Popular outdoor regions
Montclair is surrounded by some of the Bay Area’s most well-known outdoor spaces, like the Reinhardt Regional Redwood Reserve, which brushes up against Montclair. “A lot of people move to Montclair because of access to a bunch of parks. There are hiking trails all over the place,” says Gordon. The dense and sprawling forest hides campgrounds and hiking trails ready for exploration. People can also venture to the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, where they’ll find more trails and natural spots to check out. Many hikers start their journeys at the Sibley staging area just off Skyline Boulevard.

Ranch, craftsmen and bungalow homes line the winding streets that curve up and down the neighborhood’s hilly terrain. “You don’t see a lot of sidewalks in Montclair,” says Gordon. “It has a sort of a country feel to it.” Housing prices range from around $1 million to $10 million. Most homes were built in the 20th century and have been remodeled or maintained. “You can get a lot for your money,” says Gordon. “You can get a 3,000-square-foot house for $2 million.”
