Peralta Hacienda is a residential community near downtown Oakland
With rows of bungalow homes in Oakland’s lively Fruitvale district, this laidback residential district is just a short drive from shops, dining and cultural destinations downtown. It also offers competitive home prices in a city where housing costs have skyrocketed in recent years.
Housing styles include a mix of Bay bungalows and Victorian homes
Located southeast of Lake Merritt, you’ll find quiet streets with Bay bungalows and Craftsman-style homes dating back to the early 1900s, as well as the occasional Victorian home with distinctive ornamental detailing and bay windows. These homes are usually situated on small lots adorned with brushy, blooming vegetation and the occasional tall palm or pine tree. From some streets, you’ll get views of the forested Oakland Hills in the east. Home prices are less expensive here than in trendy Maxwell Park, Redwood Heights and the Dimond, typically ranging from around $600,000 to around $1 million for a fully renovated home.
Home of the United for Success Academy
At the center of the neighborhood is United For Success Academy, a middle school that pulls double duty by providing community programming and social support for families during after school hours, including bringing in onsite dental and medical providers who make themselves available to those in need. Students can also attend nearby Global Family Elementary School and Fremont High School.
The community is anchored by its historic namesake park
The neighborhood’s namesake is Peralta Hacienda, a 19th century ranch that was dubbed Rancho San Antonio. It was created via a Spanish land grant to the Peralta family nearly two centuries ago. Today, all that remains of the ranch is the Peralta Hacienda Historical Park, located at the center of the neighborhood. There, you can see exhibitions about Native and Mexican American cultures or bring the kids to the parks historically themed play structures. The six-acre park is also where you’ll find the Peralta House. Built in 1870, it's a local and state landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The grounds feature walking paths, tree canopy and the Peralta Creek. For more outdoor activities, make sure you take the kids to Cesar Chavez Park. With playgrounds, colorful murals, athletic courts and walking paths, it’s perfect for a sunny afternoon. It also has a flourishing community garden where you can pick out a patch for your fruits, veggies or flowers.
Nearby neighborhoods and thoroughfares offer shopping and dining
If you’re looking for something quick to eat, you can stop by S & S Market, a local corner store. For everything else, you’ll need to head to nearby Foothill Boulevard or International Boulevard, two busy streets that are heavy on Latin markets, taquerias, cantinas and food trucks. If you venture into neighboring Allendale, and you can grab a table at Vientian Café, a Laotian and Vietnamese bistro recently rated an “essential” East Bay haunt by San Francisco Eater. Head a little further east and you’ll find yourself in the up-and-coming Laurel district where you’ll have your pick of upscale dining options and bustling boutiques.
Navigating the Bay Area
From Peralta Hacienda, major Bay Area cultural attractions are just a short drive or train ride away. Hop on nearby Interstate 580 or catch the BART at nearby Fruitvale Station and you’re about 16 miles from San Francisco and 9 miles from Berkeley.
