Famous architect Frederick Law Olmsted left his mark on Piedmont Avenue when he designed the Mountain View Cemetery in 1863. The 226-acre garden-style cemetery sits to the north of the neighborhood and is the final resting spot of some notable figures in California history, including the renowned architect Julia Morgan, who designed the Chapel of the Chimes, which also sits in the neighborhood. Guided tours of the grandiose crypts and “Millionaire’s Row” are available to the public, and many residents use the space to jog or walk their dogs. Students may begin their education at Piedmont Avenue Elementary and Westlake Middle School, with both receiving a C-minus rating from Niche. Older students can attend Oakland Technical High School and enroll in one of the five distinct academies within the school. Oakland Tech received an A rating from Niche.
