A low-key lifestyle near downtown Nashville
Old Hickory Village offers a low-key lifestyle beside the catfishing waters of the Cumberland River. "In Tennessee, there are certain lakes you can't live on, and then you have Old Hickory Lake, where you can," says Realtor Kathy Cochran of Cottage Realty. "The prices are expensive compared to other areas on the lake, but it's so convenient to downtown Nashville," she adds. Community anchors, like the prime fishing spot, Old Hickory Beach, are named after this small pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, initially built in 1918 as a company town for DuPont employees and supervisors. The plant is still here but less prominent, with a smaller workforce. Older homes are being renovated as people flock to Old Hickory for its waterside location, and the village is adding more retail options and upgrading its parks.

Beautifying Old Hickory's green spaces
Residents enjoy small inland pocket parks, waterside green spaces, and nearby private and public golf courses. The village is also upping the ante on its offerings. A beautification project is in the works for the green space behind the art center on Robinson Road, where it's being transformed from an open field with a concrete slab into a tree-filled area with benches and trails. Metro Park is also working with the city of Nashville to fund and design a dog park at 12th Street Ball Field. Old Hickory Beach on Burnett Road offers a boat ramp, grills, grassy green areas for water gun fights and frisbee games, a sandy shore by the water, and mature trees for throwing a blanket down. A portion of its surrounding green space is devoted to manufacturing and shipping: DuPont, Berry Global Fiberware and more.

Homes on Old Hickory Lake
Many of the homes in Old Hickory Village are, in fact, old. "A lot of the original cottages are still there. Some from the early 1900s," says Realtor Kathy Comp of The Real Estate Company, who specializes in the area. She says most are fixer-uppers, but buyers she's worked with appreciate the vintage quality and that they can renovate them to their liking. "They went there for the lake," she says, adding that the properties are nothing flashy. "You have a few bedrooms and a bath, a small kitchen and a very little bit of land," she adds. Spacious lots further from the village exist, but the area's gridded streets are elevated, which has advantages by a river: "Back in 2010 when we had a major flood, the village did not flood but some areas of old hickory did," Cochran says. Cottages begin in the $200,000s and rise to around $500,000 depending on the extent of renovations. A newish home on Old Hickory Lake over 3,000 square feet could go for $2 million.

Old Hickory Community Center
Some kids practically grew up on Donaldson Avenue at the Old Hickory Community Center, with its playground, open gym, pickleball courts and after-school programing. The center is currently undergoing the early phases of a major renovation. On Jones Street, The Old Hickory Library hosts movie and craft nights, manga club and monthly book club discussions. On Fuller Street, The Old Hickory Art Center has an open studio for creative expression and art classes.

Food truck's at Old Hickory Village Farmers Market
Outside of the old Piggly Wiggly on Robinson Road, neighbors have the seasonal Old Hickory Village Farmers Market, with its food trucks and live music. It's held on the grounds of the Second Missionary Baptist Church on Hadley Avenue every Tuesday from April to September. On and surrounding Robinson Road and Donaldson Avenue are most conveniences and highlights - all in the backyard of some homes. Old Hickory Social offers something fresh, with a new upscale market as of 2024 featuring an eclectic mix of local vendors within the old Rite Aid building. It's a place to scope out vintage finds, handmade trinkets, decor and clothing.

Dockside dining at Blue Turtle Bay Marina
Uncommon Grounds OH Naz, on Jones Street, is the "everyone knows everyone" coffee shop serving breakfast, lattes and fresh grounds. Sam's Sports Grill - Blue Turtle Bar is just over a mile south from there. This "floating restaurant," as Cochran describes, is at The Blue Turtle Bay Marina and many dock up to dine. Locals can also rent pontoons and float on the lake, eating grilled fish as the sun bounces off the water.

Vocational training at McGavock High School
Metro Nashville Public Schools serves students. They may start at DuPont Elementary School, which earns a C rating from Niche, before heading to DuPont Hadley Middle School, which gets a C plus, and the C-rated McGavock High School. McGavock offers vocational training with four practical, hands-on career academies in aviation, law, digital communication and more. It's also the largest high school in Tennessee.

Easy trips downtown via I-45
"You can walk through the village. It's easy," Cochran said. While this is a pedestrian-friendly little neighborhood, locals might want a car to travel into downtown Nashville. The neighborhood's closeness to Interstate 45 makes that commute quicker. While there is a dental office in Old Hickory, hospitals are a bit of a drive, upward to 15 miles away.
Old Hickory Village is pedestrian friendly with most areas having a sidewalk for walking.
SR45, or Robinson Rd. is the main thoroughfare in Old Hickory Village to get to the Interstate.
